This petition is something else, but I signed it. How insane is it that a war-weary nation is asked to sign a petition urging a likely candidate for future president urging her to weigh in favorably on peaceful negotiations with Iran? Negotiations set in motion by the very administration she just left. Hillary was one of the many snakes in Congress who showed extremely poor judgement in agreeing with George W. Bush and voting to attack Iraq--for absolutely no reason. At least Obama distinguished himself in the Senate by voting against that war. Now he's attempting to negotiate with Iran and a prominent group like moveon.org feels the need to press Hillary and get her position on record. The people don't war, yet we have to beg our representatives and likely future representatives for peace. TO do what we want as opposed to what they're going to do anyway. That's very tragic. "Most prominent Democratic politicians have not praised the deal" indicates how far the Democrats have become hawks just like the Republicans. Is Hillary's game plan for winning the White House positioning herself as further to the right than Obama? Then why not just run as a Republican if you're gonna act like one? Perhaps some of these Democratic politicians are more concerned about retaining the campaign contributions of warmonger interest groups like AIPAC than they are in representing the opinions and interests of the majority of Americans. In particular, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been quiet. This is odd, because when there was a possibility that the U.S. would bomb Syria, Hillary wasn't shy to endorse the bombing. If Hillary would endorse the deal now, it would make a major contribution to peace. Lindsey Graham can complain all he wants, but in order to undermine President Obama's diplomacy with Iran, the warmongers need to recruit key Democrats to their side, like New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. If Hillary endorses the deal, the political space for right-wing Democrats to undermine the deal will close. Hey, America! It's First Lady Michelle Obama and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner made from organic vegetables that we grew ourselves in the White House's garden. I hope you all tried to eat healthier, too, because healthier eating is my personal platform. Even though most of the country can't even find foods that aren't genetically modified any more. And my husband appointed a former Monsanto big-wig Michael Taylor to a senior position at the FDA, in a disgraceful fox-guarding-the-hen-house scenario. Working in tandem with Monsanto, the government has almost succeeded preventing the need to label which foods contain what. It's a good thing that most of you are more concerned about my bangs than being forced to eat Frankenfoods. But look on the bright side--the economy is so pitiful that most of you couldn't afford organic vegetables if they were available in your area and properly labelled. Since AIDS with meds is a chronic and not fatal illness, many see having AIDs as just another risky behavior like smoking or eating trans fats. Except that you can stop smoking and start eating right. You can't get rid of HIV so it's better not to contract the virus in the first place. 4. Because their partner's viral load is lower when they're taking meds, some bottoms feel that it's ok to let someone positive top them without condoms if the top is on his meds. Except that some people don't take their meds everyday. On days that they don't take their meds, the viral load is higher and so the sex becomes riskier. And men lie. 5. Young gays didn't witness a generation of their friends die. So what? I didn't see a generation of my friends get eaten by crocodiles but I still know better than to swim in a swamp full of them. The BOTTOM line is that you have to protect yourself. Condoms used properly with water-based lubricants prevent the spread of HIV. 'Tis the season for sharing, but there is no need to share this virus since we know how to prevent it's spread. If gays are now so anti-Russia, why are so many more playing Russian roulette with their health? I don't enjoy using condoms, but I don't enjoy coffins either. What? How could the FDA approve GMO salmon? I wonder if it has anything to do with Obama giving a senior position on the FDA to former Monsanto big wig Michael Taylor? While Michelle Obama advocates healthier eating and her family eats organic food in the White House, they enable this frankenfish to be approved for everyone's else's consumption. Just another example of what a soulless, corrupt "leader" Obama is. Absolutely indefensible. And these GMO fish could mingle with untainted fish and spoil all fish forever. For those of you who think that Obama wants to help anyone except big business even if it means endangering our health, please explain this one.

PETITION: The Food and Drug Administration is considering approving a genetically-engineered salmon. Never before has a genetically-modified animal been approved for human consumption. And yet, the FDA's review has been insufficient, failing to consider broad environmental and public health risks from GMO salmon. The company that is producing these salmon says they won't be able to cross-breed, and yet their own data suggest that 5% of the eggs they produce and transport around the world may not be sterile. If released accidentally, these transgenic fish could severely endanger natural fish populations. As a fish designed to grow twice as fast as natural salmon, these engineered fish may also increase human exposure to growth hormones, anti-microbial drugs, and disease. Salmon is one of the world's healthiest foods, and a fish celebrated by native cultures and modern consumers alike. We simply cannot afford to jeopardize this great resource and put the environment and public health in danger. But that's exactly what will happen FDA rushes through approval of genetically engineered salmon without a much stronger review of the risks. SIGN:

CUOMO, FRACK OFF!

In defiance of widespread grassroots opposition to fracking, Governor Cuomo is attempting to lift New York's ban on liquefied natural gas infrastructure.

To be transported by truck, rail or ship, natural gas is super-cooled until it condenses into a liquid. Governor Cuomo's proposal would make it vastly easier to transport fracked gas into and around New York by legalizing the construction of facilities for liquefying fracked gas, fueling heavy trucks with fracked gas and even exporting fracked gas overseas.1 2 If we don't stop Governor Cuomo, he will usher in a major buildout of new fracked gas infrastructure, encouraging expanded fracking in nearby states and increasing industry pressure to lift New York's moratorium on fracking. Governor Cuomo's Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments on this dangerous proposal for just over another week. Lifting the ban on liquefied natural gas infrastructure may be a trial balloon to test the potential response to lifting New York's fracking moratorium, so we have to take this comment period very seriously -- will you submit a comment now? In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Governor Cuomo swore that New York would take the lead in confronting climate change. But lifting New York's ban on liquefied natural gas infrastructure isn't climate leadership. The science is clear: If we make a massive, expensive investment in fracked gas infrastructure, we will tank the climate. That's because investing in fracked gas infrastructure would incentivize the production of natural gas vehicles, power plants and export facilities, which would in turn encourage even more fracking. Extracting, transporting and burning fracked gas produces massive amounts of greenhouse gases. Liquefied natural gas is even worse for the climate because it has to go through an energy-intensive process of being cooled to about -260 degrees fahrenheit. Worse still, fracked gas displaces truly clean energy sources like wind and solar, delaying our transition to a sustainable economy.3 Earlier this year, when Governor Cuomo attempted to lift New York's moratorium on fracking, a deluge of more than 200,000 public comments killed his proposed regulations -- so we know Cuomo will be watching how many comments come in on his proposal to lift New York's ban on liquefied natural gas infrastructure. Under the deal, the U.S. military would maintain several bases, and its troops would be immune from prosecution in Afghan courts. The United States would not conduct military operations "unless mutually agreed." Afghan officials say they have kept their demand for a White House apology over deadly raids on Afghan homes. But in Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry said an apology is off the table. Secretary of State John Kerry: "But let me be clear: President Karzai didn’t ask for an apology. There was no discussion of an apology. There will be — there is no — I mean, it’s just not even on the table. He didn’t ask for it; we’re not discussing it. And that is not the subject that we have been talking about. What we’ve been talking about are the terms of the BSA [Bilateral Security Agreement] itself." The U.S.-Afghan pact now goes before an Afghan council of elders, known as a loya jirga, meeting in Afghanistan today. If approved, the United States is expected to maintain a force of around 8,000 to 12,000 troops after the formal withdrawal next year. PAKISTAN: The US is bombing a religious school after it pledged to stop the drone attacks? Do you think that might create new generations of terrorists hell-bent on attacking the US? It does. FRANKENFISH, ANYONE?

Any day now, the first genetically modified animal ever to enter our food supply, AquaBounty salmon, could be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This fish hasn't been proven safe for humans. But the FDA may approve it based on a limited, flawed, and inadequate study — despite the fact that the same study identified elevated allergy-causing potential,1 and elevated levels of the IGF-1 growth hormone, which is linked to colon, prostate and breast cancers. By this means, last March, Swiss voters created strict limits on executive pay.[1] On November 24, the Swiss will vote on whether to take a further step -- limiting executive pay to no more than 12 times the lowest salary in the company. Such a maximum wage policy allows the CEO pay increases, but only if workers get at least a twelfth as much. If the Swiss can do it, why can't the U.S.? The Swiss are also set to vote, on a date yet to be set, to create a guaranteed basic income of $2,800 (2,500 Swiss francs) per month for every adult.[2] That's about $16 per hour for a full-time worker, but it's guaranteed even for those who can't find work. You know what country can afford such a measure even more easily, given its vast supplies of wealth? The United States of America. Tell Congress and the President now! Here in the United States, had the minimum wage kept pace with productivity since the 1960s it would now be $21.72 an hour, or $3,722 a month.[3] The Congressional proposal of $10.10 an hour, which President Obama now says he supports, equals $1,751 a month for a fulltime job. The actual U.S. minimum wage of $7.25, which does not apply to all workers, makes $1,242 a month. But only if you can find work. That's less than half what the Swiss are voting on, and Swiss workers also have their healthcare paid for, public transportation widely available, quality education and higher education free or affordable, 14 weeks paid parental leave, and a nearly endless list of other advantages provided by the government. A basic income guarantee, currently practiced in Alaska and once supported by President Richard Nixon and the U.S. House of Representatives, would be far more efficient than targeted support programs, because every individual would receive the exact same check, with no stigma attached to it; and, yes -- believe it or not -- people who could find work would still work.[4] Switzerland has a greater percentage of its population made up by immigrants than the United States does. Switzerland has four national languages. What allows Switzerland to practice democracy so much more effectively? Two major parts of the answer are obvious. I've just seen MSNBC's Chuck Todd discussing how the White House is disappointed that the insurance industry isn't publicly supporting Obamacare. I don't know what to make of that notion--or whether it's even true. Clearly, the insurance companies would much rather Obamacare not take effect so that we're stuck with the same crazy system we have now, in which health care costs are the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the country and you can be denied or kicked off your coverage if you're actually ill and need it. In discussing it further, Chuck explained that the health care industry killed Hillary's attempt at reform in the 90s, so Obama decided to build on our existing system of insurance rather than start with a totally new model like single payer. Then he explained that the White House hoped insurance would be more appreciative of the ACA since it was crafted to bring the insurance companies more business, that additional business being the additional customers who could now afford insurance at a cheaper price. Hungh? I thought this was crafted to help people access health care. It was crafted as a gift to the insurance industry? And this is being openly admitted on the liberal news channel which is more likely to support Obama than any other? We should have gone for real reform. My mom (a former nurse) checked on my existing plan and Obamacare does not reduce the price one dime for me. Although, I suppose they can't kick me off the plan if I become seriously ill. Which this whole process is making me. I suppose I could quit my current plan--this is America and I'm still free, right? Actually, no. The ACA's mandate forces me to buy insurance or be fined. I try to be optimistic and tell myself that anything the Republicans want to shut down the government to prevent must be a good thing. I try to tell myself that while not single payer, which of us many wanted and which every other industrialized nation seems to be managing with, the ACA is a step in the right direction. But when you hear the more democratic-leaning TV news station openly admitting that Obamacare is designed to benefit the insurance industry rather than people, you're forced to see the difference between foolish optimism and waking up to how our government works. It works against us--those who elected them. And let's not forget the meeting where Obama invited big pharma to the White House with no press allowed before Obamacare could even be created--just to make sure that that other health-related industry knew they would still be able to give us less for more. So much for the transparency that Obama campaigned on. This is a shambles. And how about the latest report which claims that senior White House staff knew the roll-out had kinks and that there was "scant" testing? The end effect is that you start to distrust the government's capability to handle health care. So you give up and go back to your pitiful system of private insurance. I love seeing our forces used as rescue workers instead of warriors, but an ounce of prevention... Obama won both elections by organizing online support more efficiently than any candidate ever in both elections. Under Obama, the NSA now spies on all of our many emails and phone calls and has a gigantic database in cahoots with every server and mobile service carrier. Yet for healthcare, his "crowning" achievement, the man chooses a crappy site that doesn't work right? I don't get it. Can't the Obamacare website just synch up with the NSA? They can fill out all of our info for us since they already have it? I hope that Obamacare succeeds and one day goes even further to be single payer, when Republicans realize that the country won't implode if we get cheaper health care. But doesn't the level of this administration's internet expertise seem to be very developed when he wants to get something (our votes, campaign contributions, emails, phone calls) but not so well developed when he is giving us something like healthcare?

This long but super-informative piece on Hillary's possible competitor is so well-researched that they even knew what Elizabeth Warren's answering service message's prompts at her old job were. If she wants to pull Democrats in a direction that makes sense for the dying middle class--or are they calling them the "working poor" today?--I welcome someone to compete against the inevitable candidate, Hillary. Their word, "inevitable." Sounds kinda creepy, as if we don't really have a choice even when we vote. Inevitable, like lobbyists and global warming. Doesn't sound too hot to me. Yet this excerpt is a fine recommendation for Elizabeth. We need a "national furor" so maybe she can set off another one. NEW REPUBLIC: "The following month, during her very first banking committee hearing, Warren again waited patiently for her turn to speak—then promptly set off a national furor. “Tell me a little bit about the last few times you’ve taken the biggest financial institutions on Wall Street all the way to a trial,” she asked a table full of bank regulators. SHERROD BROWN AND RACHEL MADDOW TALK SOCIAL SECURITY

Thanks to Ohio's Sherrod Brown for acting like a true progressive democrat. While others (including Obama) are discussing how much we should cut from Social Security, Sherrod Brown boldly says: EXPAND IT! Don't include something broke, old people need now more than ever. Don't yank away the safety net you've promised them their entire lives in a time of recession. If we're lucky, we're all gonna get old. (And yes that was my sly attempt to try to lump myself in with those who have yet to get completely over the hill. Did it work? Don't answer that!) This is also smart politics. While I despise the Republican agenda, that party is so outrageously bold that they'll gladly shut down the government, have our credit rating dropped or whatever it takes to get their rotted agenda accomplished. They're ruthless and they stick together with a clear agenda. Unlike Obama's constant reaching across the aisle to a party which doesn't even believe he was born here. Did it work in his first term? Well, it ain't gonna work in his second term either. And voters identify and trust politicians with strong stances even if they disagree with their stance--as Chris Christie just proved in New Jersey. He's an attack dog who'll fight for what he believes in. It's more appealing than someone without clear convictions. Now that Republicans have record low numbers in the polls because they just shut down the government with demands so pitiful that they were forced to give them up, why not seize this moment to denounce the whole party as bad for the country and reckless? LOUDLY AND OFTEN AND VICIOUSLY. Just how they'd capitalize on any failures that the Dems are responsible for, from the glitches in the Obamacare roll-out to the perceived failure in Benghazi. Republicans actually are calling that Benghazi-Gate when it wasn't that big of a deal unless you watch and believe watch Fox News. Then take the argument out of the GOP playing field of how much we cut and say DON'T CUT YOU CUT A DAMN DIME FROM SOCIAL SECURITY. EXPAND IT! Just as Sherrod Brown says in the clip below. Most Americans don't want to cut Social Security, including many Republicans. We rely on it now more than ever. So use this moment to say "We want to expand Social Security, so we would certainly never dream of cutting it, you freaks!" Then even if you don't get the program expanded, it might not get cut at all. It's called bargaining. And showing the majority of voters who don't want cuts who will fight against cuts so that Democrats can actually seem to have a clear-cut and popular agenda. Why wouldn't Democrats think of this themselves? Maybe because these blue dog Democrats, conservative Democrats, corporate Democrats or whatever you want to call the kind of Democrat that Obama is, actually would tamper with cutting the social safety net. And has already offered cuts like Chained CPI, which puts democrats in a hideously weak bargaining position. Why are only progressive democrats like Sherrod Brown talking about this? Because many Democrats seem to enjoy caving so much that they barely seem like Democrats any more. Maybe it's time for the true progressives who're in line with what most Americans want on so many issues from gun control, single payer health care, legalizing weed, stopping the US's role as world police, making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes, to ZERO cuts to Social Security--to progress beyond the creaky democratic party which clearly no longer serves us. Or sit and enjoy being robbed by your elected officials of $ you've already earned. The sad thing is, this petition leads to a donate page after you've signed it. Things are so bad that sometimes two-income households are on food stamps. And we're cutting them? As we entertain ourselves with images of royal weddings and "real" housewives with nose jobs who enjoy cocktails for lunch, this is what's really going on in America. There is a reason why people say it is an "invisible" epidemic: chronic hunger in America may be reaching record rates, but we still can't or won't talk about it. More than 46 million people rely on food stamps to feed themselves and their families. They are someone's parents or children, they are co-workers and friends. Yet, if you ask many Americans, they will say that they don't know anyone receiving federal assistance. They think that food insecurity is a problem that happens to someone else. Someone they couldn't possibly know or be. But here's the problem: when something like hunger stays invisible, people don't think about it very much. They don't connect it to their own experiences. And when Republicans slash benefits and force millions of struggling families to get by on even less, people don't get angry when they need to be angry. We simply cannot afford to allow this crisis to remain invisible anymore -- we need your help. If you have received food stamps or know someone who has, please tell us your story. We need to show America that hunger can touch anyone, anywhere. And we need to make them realize that messing with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits is simply unacceptable. Republicans in Congress know exactly who they are hurting when they cut benefits -- often, their own constituents are suffering. But they still think they can get away with doing it. After all, people who need assistance often have too much to deal with to effectively fight back. And most other people think that hunger could never affect them.
