With one week to go before an Aug. 2 deadline for raising the nation's debt limit, the stakes are enormous. Some in Congress continue to press for steep cuts in programs for working families. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid remain in jeopardy. Funds for education, child care, nutrition, affordable housing, environmental protection and energy independence also are at stake. When Republican leaders talk about $3 trillion or $4 trillion in spending cuts over the next 10 years, with no new taxes on the wealthy and large corporations, please understand what they mean.

SOCIAL SECURITY — The average Social Security recipient who retires at age 65 would get $560 less a year at age 75, under a proposal to change the formula which determines cost-of-living adjustments. The same retiree would get $1,000 less a year at age 85 than under current law. Another provision pushed by House Republicans would require that Social Security always be solvent for 75 years, an avenue to even larger cuts in benefits. All of this would take place despite the fact that Social Security has not contributed one penny to the deficit and has a $2.6 trillion surplus.


MEDICARE — Raising the eligibility age from 65 to 67 is one proposal. Another would cut benefits by as much as $500 billion over 10 years. How are 66-year-old Americans with modest means going to afford health insurance with a private company especially if they have medical problems? It's not going to happen. They are going to suffer. Some will unnecessarily die.


MEDICAID — At a time when 50 million Americans already have no health insurance, Republicans and some Democrats are proposing to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid. That means that many men, women and children will lose the health insurance they have. According to a Harvard University study, some 45,000 Americans die each year because they don't get to a doctor when they should. How many more will die if Medicaid is slashed? How many children will be thrown off the Children's Health Insurance Program?


EDUCATION — Childcare and college education already are unaffordable for millions of working families. Head Start has long waiting-lists. If Republicans and some Democrats get their way, Pell grants and other educational programs will be deeply slashed. Affordable childcare and a college education will no longer be possible for many families in our country.


ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY — Forget about the government having the ability to protect the people from corporations who want to evade Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act regulations. With massive cuts in the EPA, the resources will not be there. Forget about this country having the investment capability to transform our energy system to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. Forget about creating millions of jobs rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and improving our public transportation system.


We don't have to make these cuts. Adopting a fair budget plan which ends tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations and makes real cuts in military spending is the kind of shared sacrifice that the American people want -- and that Bernie has been fighting for.

Over at the Campaign for America’s Future, the Institute for Policy Studies’ (IPS) Sam Pizzigati notes that one way to very easily tackle U.S. debt going forward would be to increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy to levels more closely matching mid-20th century rates. Pizzigati cites an IPS paper from last spring to make the argument that if corporations and households making more than $1 million paid the same rates as they did in 1961, our debt would virtually disappear in a decade:

The Obama administration is right now setting gas mileage targets for 2017 - 2025.

Unfortunately they're negotiating with the auto industry who is putting enormous pressure on the administration to weaken the proposal - even running ads in swing states attacking high standards.

A decision could emerge in the next few days. We need to send a strong message in support of strong standards right now.

STILL TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS

Obama on the debt ceiling: "I was willing to take a lot of heat from my party." But why is he willing to take heat if this isn't an actual crisis since both parties know they must raise it--which makes attaching demands from either party unnecessary? THIS is what makes me think that Obama doesn't mind cutting services, despite his saying in the same speech that we should never take our minds off of the needy. Then why is he offering unpopular cuts to appease nuts if unnecessary? To appear reasonable and attract independent voters in 2012 since he's burned his base? Then switch parties to be an independent if you are no longer a democrat.


Now if this is an elaborate ruse to make everyone see how uncooperative the GOP has become, I'll applaud him. But only if he uses his new-found credibility as the adult in the room to stand strong on the stuff he once campaigned on--ie no cuts to social services and forcing the mega-rich and the corporations to pay their fare share. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donell, a DC insider turned newscaster, knows the ins and outs of political negotiations. He claims that Obama has the republicans exactly where he wants them by proving them to be unwilling to agree with him on even crucial emergencies like the debt ceiling. And O'Donnell claims that Obama's brilliant negotiating has put him right where he wants to be--which is re-electable. But wait a second--why would I want to re-elect someone who would chop benefits for the needy in a recession while the rich get richer? Of course I'll vote for him over any republican, but it's folly to think that he'll use his second term to enact bold democratic policy which appeals to the people who campaigned for him. With the right so far right, he needs to stop gladly meeting them in the middle. He easily caved on passing the Bush tax cuts and wasn't strong on health care reform. He just dismissed Elizabeth Warren from the consumer protection agency she created--because the GOP hated her. The list goes on and on. He admitted that his "shellacking" in the mid-terms was due to a failure by him and democrats to spell out who they were. So rectify this mistake now and hammer it home that democrats stand for the working man and have compassion for the needy--seniors, the infirm, students, and veterans! Don't tell me that you're keeping the needy in mind while putting their sustenance on the chopping block when you won't dare touch the fat cats' profits. If his only platform is getting re-elected to serve us more of the same, who needs it?

The debt negotiations in Washington look like a train wreck. In slow motion. They have a certain balletic quality to them, like the train wreck scene in the movie Super 8. Unless one of those five-ton pieces of twisted metal happens to land on you.

In a sense, it’s our fault. Nature abhors a vacuum, and politics abhors a policy vacuum. Since the 112th Congress took office, there has been a policy vacuum among the Democratics. The Republicans are trying to fill that vacuum, with cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Maybe we should try to fill that vacuum. I’d like to see us concentrate on helping the 23 million Americans who can’t find full-time work, the 50 million Americans who can’t see a doctor when they are sick, and the 15 million American families who owe more on their mortgage than the value of their homes.

The other side only wants to talk about the deficit, the deficit, the deficit. It’s what Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has called “deficit fetishism.”

But as I said a couple of days ago, if you did feel compelled to save $2 trillion over the next ten years, there’s an easy, painless way to do it: PEACE.

And that’s not the only way. Off the top of my head, here are a few other things, each one of which would save up to $1 trillion, or more, over the next ten years:

We could let the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire. (“No! No!” shout the Koch brothers.)
We could let Medicare negotiate the price of drugs, the way that the VA and private insurance companies already do.
We could require the rich to pay the same percentage of their income toward Social Security and Medicare as the poor and the middle class do. Not a higher percentage – my God, that would be progressive taxation! Just the same percentage.
We could impose the same alternative minimum tax on giant corporations that we mere humans must pay.
We could reduce U.S. military spending to a paltry 40% of the world’s total, from the current 48%, which would still leave us spending four times as much as any other nation.
We could make Warren Buffett pay the same tax rate on his income as his secretary pays on hers, by eliminating the long-term capital gains tax break, the great majority of which goes to the hyper-rich.

Sanders slammed a specific aspect of the Social Security reform proposal put forth by the Gang of Six which would alter the formula used to calculate cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for seniors. Sanders said that in 10 years the new plan would mean a $560 cut in annual benefits for the average 75-year-old. He went on the criticize aspects of the same plan for cutting Medicare "by $298 billion over 10 years" and making "massive cuts" to Medicaid.

When I moved to NYC, one of the stars of latin gay bar La Escuelita was an older queen named Mario de Colombia. She had a very imaginative act full of showstoppers which included lip-synching to Over The Rainbow. Nothing interesting about that but she added a twist to her version. She'd come out and show one side of her, dressed in all black with a Judy Garland wig, synching to Judy's version of the tune. Then she'd edit in the Patti Labelle version and spin around to show her other side, which was in blackface, white dress and Patti wig. Of course, Patti's version is more bombastic so the crowd would go nuts each time she made the switch. Did I mention that a hilarious, cartoon-y rainbow loop connected the two costumes? And I don't recall anyone ever begrudging the blackface. We weren't so politically correct back then.

Another of her classics was a campy lip-synch to an opera song in a ballgown. When she hit the high notes, she'd passionately lift her voluminous skirts to reveal an enormous cock and balls. There was a time when House Republicans chose not to threaten the nation with default to get their agenda passed.
White House and congressional negotiators are currently in the process of striking a deficit reduction deal, as most Republicans in Congress are refusing to raise the federal debt ceiling without deep cuts to public investments and social insurance programs like Social Security and Medicare. By doing so, these Republicans are essentially holding the country hostage, threatening the United States with default unless Democrats agree to these cuts.

Yet these Republicans were not always demanding hostages in exchange for allowing the country to pay its own bills. In November of 2004, Congress voted in both the House and Senate to hike the U.S. debt limit by $800 billion, which raised the total ceiling to $8.1 trillion.

Cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security? Let’s think about this.

Medicare helps to heal people who are old and sick. Medicaid helps to heal people who are poor and sick. And for most people, without Social Security, they would have to work until the day they die.

These are not things that I want to cut. But some people do.

Who are these people who want to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security? I know some of them. For two years, I sat with them in a room – the Floor of the House – for several hours a day.

I got to know some of them quite well. I can summarize their views in six short words: “Let the Devil Take the Hindmost.”

“Let the Devil Take the Hindmost” refers to a situation where the Devil is chasing us. Some of us – the young, the fit, the healthy -- are able to run away from the Devil. And those others – the old, the children, the sick and, frankly, the scared – they can’t run as fast. They’re the hindmost. They’re the ones that the Devil catches, and destroys.

So what should the ones who run faster do? Should they grab hold of the hindmost, lift them up, and help them to run to safety? Or should they just let the Devil take the hindmost, while they escape?

You know what Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity would do in that situation. And Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. They would let the Devil take the hindmost.

But you wouldn’t. And I wouldn’t.

The phrase “Let the Devil Take the Hindmost” is a venerable phrase; it just celebrated its 400th birthday. It comes from a 1610 play called “Love Lies a-Bleeding.” (All you Elton John fans now know where the song “Love Lies Bleeding” comes from.) Shakespeare didn’t write the play, but it was performed by Shakespeare’s theatre troop, The King’s Men.

In Act V of “Love Lies a-Bleeding,” the people rise in rebellion against a bad government. The character Thrasiline questions whether the people can remain united, however. Thrasiline says that even when a mere “toy” clicks at the people’s heels, “they run all away, and cry, ‘the devil take the hindmost.’”

Dion responds to Thrasiline this way: “Then the same devil take the foremost too, and souse him for his breakfast! If they all prove cowards, my curses fly amongst them, and be speeding!”

(“Sousing” is cooking a cut of meat until it is well done, pulling the meat off the bones, and then mashing it.)

And that’s the point – the 400-year-old point. If the Devil is chasing us, there is no reason to think that he’ll ever be satisfied just taking the hindmost. The Devil will take the foremost, too. Mash them up, and eat them for breakfast.

The Devil in America today is poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, bigotry, selfishness, ignorance, disease and death. When the Right Wing says that we have to cut Social Security, cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, cut unemployment insurance, cut education, cut food stamps, what they’re really saying is “let the Devil take the hindmost.”

I think that we’d all be a lot better off if we stopped running, we all turned on the Devil, and we fought back together. At least we would have a chance.

I’d rather fight, not run away.

The debt ceiling must be raised in order to stop an economic catastrophe. Even Wall St. is now pressuring the GOP to just pass it as a 1 line sentence. So why are even dems attaching deep cuts to it--cuts which Bernie Sanders says would be "devastating to the working family"? Obama is now openly recommending cuts to social security--optimists had thought until today that he was just floating the idea.

Today, Obama and the bipartisan Gang Of Six came out with a plan which would give republicans "90% of what they ever dreamed of" (B. Sanders)--when they don't need to give away anything at all! And as Jane Hamish of firedoglake.com pointed out, the reason we're having such a huge deficit is that we passed the Bush tax cuts for millionaires last year. So now we need to recoup the fare share that millionaires ought to be paying by killing services that seniors and the disabled rely on as their only income. How cruel! And another huge cave from Obama and the corrupt democrats. How do you cave on not cutting soc sec/medicaid when that's all that democrats have stood for since Roosevelt? What platform do they expect to win on if they desert their base?

How do you try to win points as reasonable when negotiating with a brick wall who wants to screw the country. That isn't reasonable--I don't give a damn about what a fine negotiator he is--he's playing with our benefits and giving the GOP everything they want? I wish dems felt as strongly about their position as the republicans. The crazy thing is, that since polls indicate that most Americans want to see the rich pay more taxes right now, the majority of Americans are feeling liberal on this one. What a perfect time for dems to stand strong! Yet no one is advocating this. Or cutting much of the defense budget which has inexplicably tripled since 1997.

This looks awful for progressives. But please sign as many petitions and make as many phone calls as you can. They are still negotiating so it helps if there's an outcry. Or maybe I'm dreaming an Obama and the corrupt dems have already sold us up the river and don't even care about getting re-elected because of some lucrative deal with the devil.

Well, we need jobs! And the whole debt ceiling discussion is a non-issue, anyway. We raise the dept ceiling roughly once a year and have since JFK. Republicans voted to raise it 7 times under Bush and had no problem with it then. So what's changed? Obama is a democrat so the GOP makes a huge stink over this since they've painted him as such a foreign-born, socialist, muslim negro loser that they can't possibly agree with anything he routine safeguard proposes. The whole economy will collapse on August 2nd if we don't raise it. Even most republicans, who hope for a bad economy in order to win back the White House, don't want this catastrophe.

Oh, but the tea party republicans are so hell-bent on spending cuts that they don't care if we default on our credit. Just like they don't care if a woman has been raped by a relative--if they had their way she'd still have to carry that child with no hope for an abortion. The tea party is a reckless bunch of extremists who represent the absolute craziest fundamentalist positions to be appear in DC for decades. Sure, some of the more celebrated loonies didn't win--like Christine O'Donnell the pro-abstinence witch and Sharron Angle, who advocated exercising her "Second Amendment remedies" (ie guns) to "take Harry Reid out" if she lost. But the ones who won aren't much less extreme. Now the mainstream republicans are being forced to attempt reasoning with them over the debt ceiling. But how do you reason with a madman?

If Obama is making the GOP look unreasonable that's fine with me. But why is he even entertaining any spending cuts the republicans propose if passing the debt ceiling raise is necessary to avoid chaos? Why isn't he holding press conferences saying that any party who wants the economy to crumble is retarded? And why did Obama take his 14th Amendment option off the table when it could override this petty Congress? As the two sides quibble over something which must inevitably be done, we the people lose out. They could be working on creating jobs, for chrissakes! That's what we desperately need! And economists claim that even a discussion of not paying our debts sends such shudders down the back of the global markets that our already precarious economy could start suffering now, even if the ceiling raise passes!



If you didn't vote in the mid-term elections, then YOU are partially to blame for this mess. Americans generally aren't too interested in mid-terms. But when movements as ugly and irresponsible as the tea party are mobilizing, only a fool wouldn't recognize how dangerous it is to lose interest and not vote. Especially the segments of our society who who be penalized the most by a tea party win. But defying sense, many gays sat out the in the mid-terms because they felt Obama wasn't doing enough to advance their causes. In fact, gays even trended republican in 2010. How clever! You sure taught him a lesson by making republicans stronger and more conservative--to reduce the chances that your rights will ever advance. Try to find a pro-gay tea partier. (Or republican, for that matter.) And you got your DADT repeal that you were so peeved about soon after the mid-terms.

Women sat out this one out because many were confused by the issues. So they allowed the tea party, which frowns on their rights, to win. The dunce Sharon Angle wanted to ban all abortions yet nonsensically frowned on the fact that others' maternity leave forced her insurance to go up. Are you confused now, ladies? I sure am. By you!

Many youth, who came out in droves to support Obama's election, dropped out in the mid-terms as well. It was hoped that the Obama campaign, with his emphasis on social media, had awakened this sleeping giant. But not for long! I guess no one running in the mid-terms had Obama's rockstar appeal to galvanize them into action again. I hope they realize that while a shocking number of them don't have jobs, they sat on their asses and let the tea party score wins nationwide to advocate that more jobs won't be created through spending and unemployment benefits will be slashed or simply end. Too bad Kim Kardashian and Snooki weren't running or the mid-terms might have spoken more to our youth.

Many Americans were simply dissatisfied with all branches of the government so they didn't vote. Earth to you: elections are how our democracy functions. No opinion is expressed when you give up your patriotic responsibility to acquaint yourselves with the candidates' positions and vote.

SO TO THOSE OF YOU LAZY MORONS WHO HAVE FUCKED THINGS UP SO ROYALLY BY NOT VOTING, CAN YOU NOW DO DOUBLE DUTY AND TRY TO GET THIS COUNTRY BACK ON TRACK SO THAT WE DON'T ALL HAVE TO SUFFER SO MUCH FROM YOUR STUPIDITY? FIRE KILLS TRANNY IN DAIRY DEN

A transvestite hooker who turned an unused Elmhurst Dairy trailer into her longtime personal crack den and brothel burned to death there yesterday, according to eyewitnesses and police.

The 47-year-old woman, known only as Dee, was found dead at about 6 a.m. at South Road and 157th Street in Jamaica, in the parking lot of the city's only dairy, where workers had for years allegedly turned a blind eye.

She both "lived in the trailer" and lured men there, said a prostitute calling herself Coco Blue, adding that Dee -- tall, manly faced and in love with tight skirts -- "stuck out like a sore thumb."

The dairy had long failed to lock the containers, according to people who work in the area.

"They [hookers] were using them as free hotels," said mechanic Desmond Drew, 43.

Investigators said they were looking into what caused the fire.

Elmhurst Dairy could not be reached for comment.

If you support the troops then you want to bring them home from an endless, unclear mission. We call Afghanistan the "forgotten war." In fact, Iraq is more forgotten and that's the war we never had a reason to enter in the first place butinexplicably we're still there. Do you think the troops don't know this?
