It's so confusing to see people clapping at a Paul Ryan speech. After even ultra-conservative Fox News pointed out his issues with the truth following his baffling RNC speech, to clap for him now is to applaud lies. Not to mention that his running mate has never had a firm position on anything. Either it's applause for lies or applause for racism--as in we're the "we hate having a black president so much that we'll gladly tolerate lies" party. I don't know how else to describe it. All the patriotic chest-thumping from republicans. But how much do you love or even understand this country if you think so little of it that you imagine that a muslim terrorist managed to sneak into the White House?
Rahm Emanuel is Obama's former chief of staff. This is exactly what I mean by democrats who are now republicans. This echoes a sentiment from my mayor Bloomberg that if you live in Manhattan, you can afford private schools. Always crap on the poor. Democrats were never that party--until now. I keep hearing on the news that Obama will not get the white, blue collar male vote. And that he didn't win it in the last election. But why not? This is a group which would benefit the most from Obama's economic policies which look out for the working man more than Mitt's tax breaks for the rich economic. So if these white, blue collar male voters will vote against their own economic interests in a recession, I have to conclude that they are either too stupid to know how to get out of the financial hole they're in, or that they're just plain racist. Or both, I suppose. I guess I didn't want to really admit that about such a huge block of voters. But how else can you explain people voting against their own economic interests?

You might get a few more bones thrown to the working man, accelerated gay rights and more respect for women, but both parties jump for that corporate cash--whether it's BP spilling oil or pharmaceutical companies that Obama met with in the White House prior to formulating his health care plan.

You know those youtube videos that look really interesting but which are too long to watch in our ADD-riddled world? Well, for some reason that this non-techie can't comprehend, if you go to a youtube video and let it load completely, you can watch it on your computer even if you aren't online. I'm certain that I'm revealing how simple I am, but nothing whiles away the time like an entertaining documentary. I recommend the great Unsung series which has 40-50 minute mini-docs on all of the soul singers of the 70s and 80s which burnt brightly for a while only to disappear from the public eye. I've enjoyed the ones on Deniece Williams, Stacy Lattisaw, Billy Preston, the Sylvers and have yet to see Phyllis Hyman and many more.
And if you google "television archive youtube", a ton of candid interview will come up with stars of TV's golden age--from Bea Arthur to Shirley "Partridge" Jones. But make sure you let them load completely before you disconnect from the internet. ENJOY!

The Paralympic sponsor Atos has been targeted by disability and anti-cuts demonstrators in angry protests at its role in testing disabled people to reassess their eligibility for benefit payments.
Hundreds of disabled and able-bodied protesters chanted outside the IT group's central London headquarters, before moving to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in Westminster, the government department in charge of the scheme. There were minor scuffles with police after a small number of protesters occupied the lobby and attempted to blockade the department's front entrance.
Atos has been the focus of fierce controversy over its sponsorship of the Games while contracted by the DWP to carry out "fitness to work" tests, which campaigners argue are part of a money-saving drive to reduce benefit payments.

THE CREOL CONNECTION: NEW ORLEANS, HAITI AND CATASTROPHE

New Orleans and Haiti were profoundly connected long before their dual disasters. Nowhere else in the U.S. has a longer, deeper relationship with Haiti than New Orleans. Their histories crisscross: Both suffered colonization and enslavement by the Spanish and French. Louisiana even came to be part of the US because of Haiti: France sold the Louisiana Territory -- approximately one-third of the current U.S. land mass -- to the U.S. in 1803 to recoup some of the financial losses it incurred while trying to defeat the Haitian revolution. (France also wanted to create a "maritime rival," as Napoleon called it, to England.[i]) Blacks, mulattoes, and whites, free and enslaved, moved back and forth between the two places so much that, by 1809, one in two of New Orleans' inhabitants was from Haiti.[ii] Today, the populations share gene pools and names via the same French, Spanish, and African ancestors.
They have similar cultures, with connections between the music, the living French language and slightly overlapping Creole ones, Carnival and parading (rara, musical troupes in Haitian streets, and the uniquely New Orleans street traditions of second lines and Mardi Gras Indians), Creole food and Creole architecture, and the religion spelled Vodou in Haiti and Voodoo in New Orleans. Both are rich in laid-back and highly interactive communities, and keeping them strong is what underlies a lot of the traditions, like courtyard- and stoop-sitting, "speaking to" your neighbor, and communal street reveling.
