Legendary literary lesbo Sappho is still making waves!
FROM HUFFPO:
ATHENS, Greece — A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.
Three islanders from Lesbos _ home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women _ have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.
One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.

THE BENEFIT CONCERT
DON HILL'S
511 GREENWICH STREET (AT SPRING) NYC
FROM 10:30 PM
$10 IN ADVANCE, $15 AT DOOR
21 AND OVER, I.D. REQUIRED
On what would have been Dean Johnson's 47th birthday, his many friends, cohorts and fellow musicians join for an epic celebration of New York City's recently lost Star. The towering Johnson was a pioneer in many ways, helping to shape the NYC gay and transgendered nightscape with his parties ROCK 'N ROLL FAG BAR and HOMOCORPS. Best known as songwriter and lead singer for two influential NYC bands, DEAN AND THE WEENIES and THE VELVET MAFIA, he will be remembered that way tonight. Both bands will take the stage for extended sets with guest artists from Dean's many nocturnal circles performing his most classic songs. At presstime, they are AMANDA POLLOCK, BEBE BUELL, BONNIE BOWERS, COREY TUT, DAZZLE DANCERS, DUELLING BANKHEADS, EUNICE HOLLAND, JENNY MAUL, JOEY ARIAS, KEVIN AVIANCE, MELISSA TIERS, MICHAEL "FORMIKA" JONES, MISS MANDY LEMONS, NURSE WANDA (JEAN WALSH), PERRI MASCO, PHOEBE LEGERE, THE GIRLS FROM PLANET MUFF, WORLD FAMOUS *BOB* and XAVIER. DJs are Dean's longtime collaborators CLARK RENDER and TENNESSEE
Besides celebrating Johnson's cultural legacy in video and song, the evening also nods to his big heart - 100% of proceeds after show expenses will benefit SYLVIA'S PLACE, providing shelter for homeless GLBT youth in NYC. The night is being produced by Dean's sister BETH JOHNSON with three of his longtime co-producers - CHI CHI VALENTI (THE JACKIE FACTORY) and JOE BIRDSONG and HATTIE HATHAWAY of RAPTURE EVENTS. ROCK N ROLL FAG BAR 2008 is also being planned with the help of visual and musical curators ALICE O'MALLEY, LESLIE STERNBERGH and ADAM ALEXANDER, STUART KLINGER (THE WEENIES) and SUSANNE HASSENSTEIN (THE VELVET MAFIA).

HMMMM....
The Rev. Jeremiah Wright couldn't have done more damage to Barack Obama's campaign if he had tried. And you have to wonder if that's just what one friend of Wright wanted.
Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds.
A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity. (She is an ordained minister).
It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter. ...

JULIE ANDREWS TURNS 70
To commemorate her birthday , actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.
One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'. Here are the lyrics she used:
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts ,and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinning',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.
(Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores.)
Bunny note: But girl, be honest. You were balding since your twenties!

COLLAR QUEEN?
Craig's List is a hoot. Here's a recent entry (perhaps inspired by the Pope's visit) forwarded by a friend:

Hey, Father, I saw you giving me the eye before Mass with the Pope at St. Pat's...I know your b/f who showed me your pic, but you don't know that yet...Hit me up and lets see if we can connect too (your b/f says you and your priest friends love younger guys). Major collar queen here...I know you guys read Craigslist...please e-mail!
I also was cruising the tranny prostitute section to check out my competition and found this odd pic for a hooking ad. I mean, she's really cute, but the argyle sock with a g-string and wife-beater posed by a pool table is just too many things! LOVE IT!

PAPER MAG'S DRAG PANEL
I edited this video a few years ago, and finally got it online with some help from my webmaster. It was my first attempt at video editing, and since the panel was so lively, it was very difficult to chop it down to a watchable (or so I believed) length. Paper's editor, David Hershkovitz presided, and the panelists included John Cameron Mitchell, Michael Musto, drag king Murray Hill, Boy George, and myself. The sound quality isn't top notch, and the editing (2 cameras) isn't exactly stellar. I know that Boy George is not gonna like the constant side angle we used on him, and I thank Satan that my double chins aren't shot from that angle. However, I do think that Boy George will be delighted at how insightful and funny he comes across. He'd been living in NYC for about a year at the time this was shot, and was totally part of the downtown gang, so he felt quite free to insult us all, especially me! Besides the intro which I narrate, the only other B-roll footage is a quick shot of the luscious Amanda LePore. I felt the need to include it since at the time this was recorded (2003?), she had not yet sky-rocketed to international fame. Anyway, it's a little long--in 2 parts--so wait until you have a little time to check it out. I would love to know what you guys think of my fledgling directorial effort! And thanks to Paper for letting me combine their footage with mine. And for arranging the whole thing at the downtown W Hotel. And to the wine sponsor, which freed our tongues quite successfully.

MILLIE JACKSON LIVE!
Singing her bombastic cover of IF LOVIG YOU IS WRONG in 1984. I've seen many soul divas perform, and none of them hits every stop with a hand movement like Millie does. I guess that's why her music is for popular for drag queens to synch to.
And here she is in a video for an 80's duet with Elton John which I'd never heard of.

WHITNEY CONCERT IN TOBAGO
Wearing a white gown with a single shoulder strap, Houston skipped around the stage and continuously shouted to the crowd: "I love you Trinidad !'
Unfortunately, the concert was in Tobago! Locals shouted back each time: "This is Tobago!"
MORE: AOL NEWS
The article also mentions that by the 3rd tune into her set, Whitney's voice was a rasp. I just don't see how such a divine voice could disentegrate so fully. But I was in LA recently and someone show me some shocking footage in Turin where the former diva sounded awful. I had hoped that the drugs' effects on her chords would subside after she stopped using. But it may be a cumulative efect which has ruined some of her once stellar register for good. I hope not.
Here is a video of her Turin show. She sounds awful. And I hate the white gloves!

A SERIOUS LINGERIE FETISH!
(AP)
Police: Man in drag rammed car into Mich. lingerie store
COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Police say a man dressed as a woman repeatedly crashed his car into a suburban Detroit lingerie store that refused to hire him.
Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe says Jeremy McIntosh, 27, was arrested Saturday outside Intimate Ideas. Damage to the store was estimated at $3,000.
McCabe says McIntosh was wearing "facial makeup, lipstick, blue Capri pants, red flip-flops, a flowery blouse and a matching flowery women's bra."
McIntosh told deputies he is homeless and wanted to go to jail because he had nowhere else to go.
McIntosh remained jailed after his arraignment Monday on charges including malicious destruction of property and reckless driving. McCabe says McIntosh doesn't have a lawyer yet.

DONNA SUMMER: BLACK POWER
Thanks to Jason for sending me this rare clip from some 1969-ish film. Donna's body looks amazing and she alsways sounds fantastic, but oddly, the Queen of Disco never really moved very well. I guess with that voice and those terrific songs, she didn't have to. But she does seem awfully bored to be singing Black Power. Wonder what this film was?

SOME "DIRT" ON BETTY GRABLE
From Lypsinka:
From the bio "Ethel Merman" by Brian Kellow:
"The company for DUBARRY WAS A LADY was wacko - completely wacko," recalled Lewis Turner, a member of the show's dancing chorus....The "wacko" group of players also included Betty Grable, the vivacious blond dancer making her Bway debut after a discouraging nine-year stint in Hollywood...During a long run, a play's ensemble effort always deteriorates, and DUBARRY was no exception. One cast member whom Ethel observed from a somewhat critical distance was Betty Grable. Over the years Ethel would acquire a reputation for being tough on the beautiful girls in her shows. But it wasn't Grable's looks or popularity with the rest of the cast that unnerved her; it was her fondness for cutting up onstage. "Grable was happy to have a job," remembered Lewis Turner. "But she hated doing the same thing every night. It was just so boring to her. She would try to make everyone screw up somehow." One night, in the middle of a scene, Grable whispered in Lahr's ear, "How would you like to stick your cock up my ass and make some fudge?" Turner recalled that Lahr "couldn't remember the next line. The audience didn't know what was going on. He was hysterical."

ELEPHANT PAINTS SELF PORTRAIT?
I'm now wondering if this touching video isn't fake. Since they never shoot the elephant from a wider angle, someone could easily be holding and maneuvering the trunk. Also, some animals have self-images an recognize themselves in mirrors, etc., so it's not impossible to believe that an elephant could paint itself. But how could it tell that humans would think a flower in the trunk would be a cute finishing touch? Hmmm.

PENNY MCCLEAN: LADY BUMP
I hate this song except for the "Look at me" drum break, but it is insane to watch Penny shriek out that one weird note in this totally weird song which must have been written by non-English speakers. But I forgive Penny anything because she did actually record a song called DANCE, BUNNY HONEY, DANCE, DANCE.
LINDA CLIFFORD: RUNAWAY LOVE
The music video is so new at this point that the idea foor this one is shocking. But the artist (barefoot) on a fountain where there are already people watching--did they even get a permit?--and make it look as though the tourists who were already milling around the fountain are your audience. Cuckoo! And why oes she keep looking over to her right-at the director? But it's such a great song.
Here's Linda synching RED LIGHT from FAME in an early version of the MC Hammer doodoo britches which make her look positively deformed. And you'll never guess who pops up in the middle of this song!
And finally, here's her on some French Solid Gold-type show synch-ing IF MY FRIENDS COULD SEE ME NOW--backed by a horny spaceman????
