Khalid Adem, 30, was found guilty of aggravated battery and cruelty to children. Prosecutors said he used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in his family's Atlanta-area apartment in 2001. The child's mother, Fortunate Adem, said she did not discover it until more than a year later.
Adem, who had no criminal record, could have been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison. He held his face in his hands and wept loudly after the jury's verdict was read.
During her father's trial, the girl, now 7, clutched a teddy bear as she testified on videotape that her father "cut me on my private part."

Gonna have to go ahead and say all this business about doing it to deprive women of pleasure is a western interpretation. Is it really these people's fault that they grow up in a country where people have believed for centuries that women who are circumcised are more beautiful, cleaner, and more likely to get married. Does anyone REALLY think a dad would do this to his child so that she can't orgasm? I think not. Parents want what's best for their children no matter what society they grow up in and unfortunately they don't have the possibility of changing what society says is best. Throwing people in jail is certainly not the way to fix that.
And on top of that, what about all the boys in the US who get their foreskins ripped off everyday without any anesthesia because people think its cleaner or it looks prettier or some other such nonsense that we all know is untrue now. Unfortunately, even in this country, there is a notion that women who enjoy sex (other than for procreation) are slutty. That's why so many sexually active/married uncircumcized women in this country have never had an orgasm. The father was only doing a cultural practice that is very common throughout the world. Yeah, it sucks, but its a tribal practice like male circumcision.
I think the main problem is, is that it is done so late in life. If you are going to "consecrate" your child through circumcision it has to be under the care of both parents when the child is in infancy.
Circumcision should probably be outlawed, though, because of high instances of penis ablation and unwanton disengenderment in both sexes.
In this particular case I would say both the parents should pay heavy fines and be investigated by CPS and laws need to be made to oversee traditional child circumcision in a safer and more professional environment, if it is to be allowed at all.
There are a lot of old traditions that need to be phased out, by legislation if necessary. Female circumcision especially is definitely at the top of the list.

But I get deeply disgusted by the fact that female circumcision (or genital mutilation, if you prefer) is viewed completely differently by our society/lawmakers than male circumcision.
