SISTER ACT REVIEW

I don't generally love musicals and am especially critical of the dumbing down of B'way featuring musicals made from movies or the music of Abba/Billy Joel. That said, Sister Act is the flashiest, zingiest, funniest musical I've EVER seen. Including Dreamgirls! The new music is quality disco and 70's r&b-themed and to hear an orchestra's razzle dazzle horn section jazzing up the arrangements was nothing short of thrilling. The whole cast was major with excellent character actors galore (including the understudy who played Mother Superior) but the show's clear star is powerhouse Patina Miller in the Whoopi role. There was absolutely no question that the audience would leap to their feet when she took her final bow. The moment she steps onto the stage you know that this mega-watt talent is gonna take you on a helluva ride. From the top-notch cast to the fun music and arrangements, this is two hours of sheer escapism at it's best. I can't recommend it highly enough--and it really isn't even my cup of tea and I'm not too familiar with the film. But this degree of showmanship shines through any genre.
