President Bush said Monday he believes schools should discuss "intelligent design" alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life.
During a round-table interview with reporters from five Texas newspapers, Bush declined to go into detail on his personal views of the origin of life. But he said students should learn about both theories, Knight Ridder Newspapers reported.
"I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought," Bush said. "You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes."
The theory of intelligent design says life on earth is too complex to have developed through evolution, implying that a higher power must have had a hand in creation.
Christian conservatives — a substantial part of Bush's voting base — have been pushing for the teaching of intelligent design in public schools. Scientists have rejected the theory as an attempt to force religion into science education.

Got Science?
The way the word 'theory' is bandied about these days by religious zealots makes you think that they're actually interested in science. But, the popular usage of the word 'theory' is very different from the scientific definition.
President Bush and his followers would like us to think that assumptions supported by belief equates to a theory. i.e. - The world is so incredibly complex and stuff that a divine genius must have created it all. But the problem is, this is only a 'hypothesis'.
How would this become a theory to a scientist? It would need to be tested by the scientific method. In other words, once a hypothesis is postulated, it is subjected to a series of tests designed to produce results that will validate or invalidate the hypothesis. This is tricky when you are dealing with gods. In their infinite wisdom, the gods -- that, according to intelligent design hypotheses created the awe-inspiring everything of our cosmos -- forgot to leave us concrete proof of their existance. This makes it very tough to test for their existence. It would make their argument stronger if it were possible to contact your favorite god, ask him/her/it questions regarding the origins of the universe, and have independent replication of the same conversation by different members of the scientific community. This is what the scientific method is all about. If you can find actual evidence to support a hypothesis through some systematic approach like this, then WHAMMO! your hypothesis is supported by said evidence and becomes a theory.
But, what happens when god doesn't answer your calls? Then you have to find some other way to test a connection between everything we can see/hear/smell/touch/taste with a god that no one has found a way of seeing/hearing/smelling/touching/tasting.
So far, the best way to 'get to know' god, according to believers is to.... believe! So, the circular argument begins... and continues, for it can never end. Since, you always end up coming back to belief at some point.
So, the result of proposing the teaching of intelligent design hypothesis, is that children (and way too many adults) start to forget what science is..... and maybe start to 'believe' that science IS faith.
If we start down this path, then none of us will even want a medical insurance program because doctors will go back to killing a goat and inspecting it's innards for clues to what may be ailing a patient. Who wants their cancer-patient son treated by a doctor whose training is not founded in rigorous scientific training? Not me. Who would buy airplane tickets from a company who hired intelligent airplane designers? You?
I'll take a tall glass of unadulterated science over the pseudoscience that this administration is spouting forth any day.
