BIZARRE JUDY GARLAND IN BLACKFACE

I have always found her body language disturbing--perhaps the amphetamines they pumped in her to keep her weight down?--but this is particularly odd. Not because she's in black face--that was common back then. But why put on black face and sing without soul and with these strange movements which someone considered in character?
