STEPHEN KING RANT FROM EW.COM
THERE IS A QUAINT CUSTOM OF LEAVING UNWANTED MAGAZINES ON A LEDGE NEAR THE MAIN HALLWAY IN MY BUILDING. SO I PICKED UP A COPY OF ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY AND POPPED IT IN MY BAG ON A TRIP. A NEWS FREAK, I CARE ABOUT SO FEW TV SHOWS THAT I COME ACROSS. NOWADAYS, THE NETWORKS CAN'T EVEN SEEM TO COBBLE TOGETHER ENOUGH CUTE OR DRAMATIC BITS TO MAKE THE TRAILER FOR A SERIES LAUNCH SEEM SLIGHTLY ENTERTAINING. SO IT WAS REFRESHING TO HEAR SOMEONE ELSE, WHO CERTAINLY KNOWS THE ENTERTAINMENT BIZ INSIDE AND OUT, RAIL AGAINST THE STATE OF THINGS WITH EVEN MORE VITRIOL THAN I DO.
HERE'S AN EXCERPT FROM HIS POP OF KING COLUMN:
Why should we care?
Simple: Because right now there are no adequate replacements for the quality that looks to be on the way out — for entertainment that really moves us. When crap drives out class, our tastes grow coarser and the life of the imagination grows smaller.
And when the good stuff's gone?
It ain't comin' back, son. That's what I'm really afraid of.
