"Madonna might have been the Roxy's most famous visitor. But Peter Rauhofer,
who has DJ'd Saturday night's event since 1999, most fondly remembers Yoko
Ono's appearance December 8, 2002-the 22nd anniversary of John Lennon's
death. "She came to the DJ booth and wanted to do some moaning to my music,"
he says, laughing. "To say, 'I'm going to go to a gay club at four in the
morning and do some moaning'-she got so into it, we were really all cracking
up. This is one of the most legendary moments, and that happened out of
nowhere. She is a 70-year-old woman, you know?"

Who could ever forget Yoko Ono's "Kiss Kiss Kiss" song? The b side of John Lennon's "Just Like Starting Over" single. lol
Has nobody heard her recently-released album of re-worked songs, 'Yes, I'm A Witch'?
It's one of the best albums I've heard this year. I'm not shitting you.
Cat Power's re-working of 'Revelations' is unbelievably touching. The first time I heard it, it made me cry.
I don't know why people knock Yoko. I've recently obtained most of her back-catalogue and she was so ahead of her time. By comparison, Bjork's similar avant-pop offerings sound disigenuous and arch.
Even her "screaming" songs are strangely hypnotic after a while.
She knows that she's slightly silly too - which makes her all the more fantastic. I love her!!!

Yes - that is a decent memory from The Roxy. But from someone who was there well before 1999 - I know terrifying - my memories skew a bit further back.
Who can forget all those amazing Sunday Nights Roller Disco? Or the first time there was live music - these guys nearly got booed off the stage - it was RUN DMC. Then there were the amazing parties thrown by Leigh Chappel. What about the blow your socks off Fashion Show of Couture Designer Anthony Wong (sad that he went so suddenly)- Hell, I was even in that one.

Two of my personal favorite memories couldn't be farther apart. It was mid-1985 and the Roxy was very - well, what we'd call today "Thug" inhabited. Any time you were there you could be sure The Fat Boys would be there eventually talking their way into the glassed off VIP room overlooking the entire club and scamming for drink tickets. It was on one of these such nights a shoot-out broke out in the VIP lounge. All the girls and myself (and I wasn't even in drag!) were quickly pushed through a hidden door in the wall to a some secret room.
All was quiet for a while trying to make out the argument that was still raging on in the main room. Out of no-where one of the girls let out a heavy sigh and said, "Damn - all I wanted was to suck some big dick tonight! Is that too much to ask?" As the other girls nodded in ascent not missing a beat I chimed in with, "You got that right Sister!"
The entire room cracked up - from that night forward if any of us saw one another we'd ask "how goes the hunt?"
The other was one of Leigh & Dave's Bastille Day Parties from most likely 1988. I handmade a full red, white and blue semi-cubistic Marie Antoinette outfit for dancing on the front boxes. Not only was it stunningly bright - I had put a lot of thought into it. The actual skirt top was flat as a table. BUT - I had put in three small indentations that held: my purse, my cocktail, and an ashtray! I nevere had to leave the box.
Okay - enough ramblings from an old queen. But DAMN - those were some great parties!
