JENNIFER HOLIDAY ON DREAMGIRLS

There's some interesting background info on the showstopper here. I do recall that Jennifer's second song, the incredible drag classic I AM CHANGING, was added to the musical to make the most of Jennifer's immense talents. And I did think it was odd that they used Jennifer's version of AND I AM TELLING YOU in the movie's trailer. I also thought it was just plain dumb that in the early 60's Supremes looks, Beyonce and co were wearing big 60's wigs without big lashes. Then again, it could be said that I'm a little over-partiall to big lashes.

FROM AN INSIDE EDITION INTERVIEW:

Jennifer Holliday, the original Dreamgirl, who created the breakout role of Effie White twenty years ago on Broadway, says she's very disappointed at her lack of involvement in the soon-to-be-released film version of Dreamgirls.

"I'm not going to lie - I did have hopes that I would reprise the role for the screen. What I wasn't prepared for was not to even be asked to do a cameo of some sort," Holliday told INSIDE EDITION's Deborah Norville.

Holliday says the filmmakers use her voice for the hit song, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," to market the movie.

"For six months they used my voice on the trailer," Holliday told INSIDE EDITION, explaining she doesn't want people to think she's angry, but admits the resurgence of interest in the Dreamgirls story is extremely bittersweet for her.

Okay, I just read the full article, and I can't believe I'm saying this (well, yes I can): Jennifer Holliday is a narcissistic, nasty witch.

It does say that she doesn't want people to think she's angry, but admits the resurgence of interest in the Dreamgirls story is extremely bittersweet for her. It happens a lot Broadway originators of parts are left out of movie casts. Dorothy Lyman was replaced with Carol Burnet twice. I had no idea that Phillis Hyman had passed her self on in the 90's, such a sad end to a wonderful talant.

I cannot believe how little credit the original Broadway show is getting. I saw it in New York in the early 80s. It was Jeniffer Holliday who made the song"And I Am Telling You" famous and she won a TONY award for it in 1982.
I hope the credits for the upcoming film will include.
Jeniffer Holliday has a right to be ticked off. I am.

I'm really worried about Ms. Holiday. Did she really think anyone in Hollywood would even consider casting her for a role she played over 20 years ago and for which she is oh... about 20 years too old? I know acting means being able to play different ages and things but she's really bugging.

I know she deserved a better deal than she got. She had (has?) an amazing voice and really turned the kids out with a major timeless song but got passed over for a bunch of skinny bitches throughout the 80s. But she needs to stop carrying on about Dreamgirls.

After creating Anita on Broadway, Chita Rivera got passed over for the movie version of West Side Story and Rita Moreno went on to win an Oscar and become a star. Does anyone remember Carol Lawrence who played Maria and was replaced by Natalie Wood, who didn't even sing?! Shit's rough out there.

Beyonce and a lot of

don't get it. They don't have it.

They fuck it up all the time.

this stupid thing is going to

1/1000th of a kilogram of the umph

and emotion and power from the

original Dreamgirls.

That soundtrack, the

I heard an interview with

that stupid dumby Beyonce who when

asked about the film only made

some flip remarks about the weight

the "fun" costumes in the film but

Hack, honey. Take away the

Anyone remember that fart of

Jennifer is a women of tremondous talents, but shes to old to have had hopes of playing effie on the big screen.I hope she means she wanted to play effie a long time ago on the big screen. If she played her now that would be as ridiculous as when diana ross played dorothy in the wiz she was in her mid thirties by then.Producers probably learned from that mistake, stephanie mills should have been dorothy in the wiz!

How about making something new like dreamgirls was

Dreamgirls wasn't a remake of something else

It was original

What is the deal with this dead fucking end that our creative culture has come to that every song/film/television show is a remake of an old one

It's sad

You know, if you take time to come up with something so pivotal in American Musical Theatre as the character Effie, then why not expect some kind of recognition for that? C'mon, even Dolly Parton gets recognized for creating the song "I Will Always Love You" made even more famous by Whitney Houston. Another thing, to call her a narcissistic, nasty witch is just as outrageous as saying Craig Hickman is sensible...Jennifer Holiday never said her version was better or even spoke badly about the cast in order to make herself any better. It is ok for the creator to feel upset when he or she doesn't get their props for something they've created, no?

I saw Jennifer Holiday as Effie on Broadway and it still takes my breath away. I would hope she comes back strong and gets her chance. She has talaent and is beautiful...this, by the way from a mom of 8 who just appreciates talent and great singing. Beyonce...a duet with the original Effie, perhaps?? That would show class or her part.

i think jennifer holiday has an amazing voice and her version of the song is by far superior to the new version. it would have been great had she been given a cameo in the movie but hey i like the idea of beyonce or even the new jennifer dueting with her to help reignite her career it has been too long si=nce we heard from her

The only thing that doesn't make sense is why are they using Holiday's version of the the song in the promos when she is neither in the film nor sings in the film? That is the problem--using Holiday's voice in the promo and no one acknowledging it. False advertising. If that new Jennifer was so great, why aren't they using her version in the promos?

Jennifer Holiday has to be one of the most amazing singers EVER. I saw her in the original show on Broadway ( a year before that she was on Broadway in "Your Arms Too Short To Box With God". I saw that too.)I still listen to that cast album, and no one has ever been able to sing those songs with the control and power she did. Jennifer Hudson does a decent job but she's nowhere near the singer Jennifer Holiday is. So Miss Holiday should be confidant that some of us remember and still appreciate her for who she is. It's silly of her to expect the film producers to ask her to be in the movie. You don't see Sherilee Ralph complaining she wasn't asked. Truth is Ms. Holiday has always been difficult. For you girls old enough to remember, she was fired from Dreamgirls before it opened, and rehired on her terms because the producers knew they'd never find her equal.

I just turned 30 this year and never had the pleasure of seeing Dreamgirls on broadway. Though, I can remember all of the excitement about the whole thing, when I heard about the movie,it was my chance to be excited about finally being able to see it. I would kill to see the original, but there is no way that can happen. My point is, don't dump on Beyonce',J. Hudson, and the rest of the cast for doing their best. I grew up loving all of the ladies in the original and want them to know the world CAN'T ever forget them. However, it will be a dream for me to see this thing on screen or on stage! Is there a full, original copy anywhere? Niechelle

j.hudson is a very good singer and she does a good job with "and i am telling you" but never in a million years will she sing that song like ms. j. holiday.

She has had a very bitter struggle from the early days... the part itself was grueling and she did it for four years... for years the song was her life... the recording career never took off even though the mid-80s Ashford and Simpson songs are amazing and the Gospel is among the best ever... and she never returned to Broadway in role created for her, which is what she most needed to sustain her career...

It would be better if she could be generous, as a kind of old-hand who could now pass the torch to JHud, but I sense the years of struggle and continued struggle make that impossible...

I can sort of understand her feelings... imagine if Ray Stark had made Funny Girl with Streisand... but it is already a generation ago.

Still, she is a legend and a major part of American theater history. That is is tremendous accomplishment.

What happened to Jennifer holiday is absolutely nothing new, sad to say...

When the West Side Story movie came out, Chita Rivera was replaced by Rita Moreno, who went on to outshine her predecessor and win an Oscar along the way.

Patti Lupone ws completely ignored when the movie version of Evita came out.

I'm sure I can come up with other examples.

In short, it's par for the course. No one will completely match Jennifer Holiday's performance, but the movie is a different creature. And, frankly, Jennifer Hudson's performance was spot on. She filled the big shoes of Jennifer Holiday as well as anyone could.

What really is upsetting is that there were lots of high powered gay people involved in making this movie and they all ignored Jennifer Holliday (even Lorell got a cameo). Jennifer Holliday has supported the gay communicty countless times and they have let her down. That tells me a lot about the ethics of these people.

i can relate to jennifer. i am from the younger generation (im 18 to be exact) and it saddens me that we no longer have these entertainer's making music. dont get me wrong i listen to the stuff that is played today but i only get meaning and purpose out of artist such as jennifer, patti, aretha, marvin and al. i truly wish i had been born in an earlier time. as far as this particular situation i feel as if jennifer has a right to speak up. seriously dont get me wrong beyonce has a wonderful voice nd all but none of them will ever be as great as the ones b4 them.

Saw Sheryl Lee Ralph on the cover of a magazine yesterday tagged as "the original dreamgirl" and she looked amazing...

I think they should have all three original dreamgirls and the new three at the Oscars! That would truly be an event and would def make amends.

Has anyone seen the video of Holliday singing at the White House for Ron and Nancy? Was she drugged out or what? Its kind of fantastic.

Why doesn't one of the NYC cabarets book her for a two or three week stint, that would surely be a sell-out and great fun?!

Jennifer Holiday is an original, this new little girl, whom has paid little dues is sad carbon, want to be copy. Ever since dope dealer, giant corporations, street thugs and hoochie tramps have taken over the entertainment industry, all the public is fed is mediocre bullshit.
The music video killed real talent because the ever hungry, stupid, public must have some new sensation and talent and class have nothing to do with wallstreet tring to sell a new product, this is how you get stars like Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Brandy, Music Soulchild ( whom can't sing any more than a rotting courpse can}Jnet Jackson is not a singer, neither is Beyonce, she is just another tits and ass show, with computer experts that use Pro Tools and other recording programs that give off the illusion of real talent. How tragic. Icould go on and on about this but, whats the point

I think Jennifer Holiday should have been offered a cameo, along with the other original "Dreamgirls". I don't think the movie would not have been the same with the strong presence of the Effie White character. I'm a big Jennifer Holiday fan and I have missed her in the music world, she has sooo much to offer.

I just want to add a little something....Jennifer Holiday is one of my favorite singers...I don't think she was mean or even being a witch...but it was her style the young Jennifer Hudson was portraying....but she did an excellent job and she deserves an Oscar..for playing the role no one other than Jennifer Holiday could...Jennifer Hudson did a Excellent job...No one might not ever have the lungs Jennifer Holiday has...but Jennifer Hudson came closer than anyone else has....

10:57 PM

I don't think she is being a witch at all. She is just being honest. She just wants her props where it's due. You imagine taking years creating something, putting your heart and soul into it, and then being shafted and unrecognized for it.... It can't be a good feeling. She knows a whole new generation is going to be seeing Jennifer Hudson, and not recognizing the original. Jennifer Holiday is Effie. Jennifer Hudson does a phenominal job filling Jennifer Holiday's shoes, but Jennifer Holiday is in a league of her own. She is amazing!

I believe Jennifer Holiday is a big talent.....but....Dreamgirls is 20 years old......What has she done with that great voice in the last 2 decades outside of her 2 famous songs.....(very little) This is the real problem......Most of the orginal Dreamgirls cast has moved on to bigger and better things....Why cant Jennifer Holiday do the same. She knew the movie was coming out.....Why did she make a CD to release during the opening of the movie?.....Diana Ross was smart enough to do that with a CD of Love Songs. Jennifer needs to get over her Dreamgirls fame and start singing........I want to hear her.

I saw the original broadway musical of Dreamgirls and loved it, i also loved the movie. Jennifer Holliday should be proud that Jennifer Hudson was selected to play Effie White because i don't think anyone else could've done it better... Both Jennifer will always be unforgetable....

that's how hollywood does black talent it's insulting. it seems as though blacks can only get so far in this "free society" then they want you to wither away. Name A black actor or actress that has A number of awards let alone A number of nominations. But they'll put Robert "DRUG OUT"Downey on as A presenter and put him in more movies and save his image!!

To Craig,

Jennifer Holiday is not a nasty witch. I don't blame her for being disappointed for not even being asked to do a cameo in the new movie. Jennifer Hudson did an awesome job in the movie and so did the rest of the cast. How can you make a movie of a hit Broadway play and not ask a few of the stars especially the star who played the role that Jennifer Hudson played. Effie White was the main character when you look at the movie. Jennifer Holiday is only asked to be recognized. She is not asking for thousands or milliions of dollars for her name being mentioned. A little recognition would not have hurt. I think she is an awesome actress and singer. Her original version of "I am telling you" sends chills up my spine. I am very happy for Jennifer Hudson and all of the awards she won. She truly deserved it. But we cannot forget who originally played the part of Effie White. Jennifer Hudson did make that acknowledgement after making her speech when she won her Oscar. Coodoos to Jennifer Hudson!

Signed,

A big fan of Jennifer Holiday!!

Ha... all of you guys who thought that the new Jennifer was going to be a bad actor are gay. She did great. If i were jennifer holiday i would praise JHud for playing my role so well. (even though she should be recognized for her accomplishments)
Personally, I love Jhud's version better than JHoliday's. Her voice is timeless!

ARE YOU ALL CRAZY! JENNIFER HOLIDAY IS TOTALLY PHENOMENAL! PLUS WITH HER ASTOUNDING WEIGHT LOSS SHE STILL LOOKS YOUNG ENOUGH TO HAVE REVIVED HER PART AS EFFIE IN THE MOVIE DREAMGIRLS,SHE IS BEAUTIFUL! YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR NEGATIVE REMARKS,WHY DON'T YOU ALL JUST PUT YOURSELF IN HER PLACE! HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? JENNIFER HUDON WAS REALLY GOOD BUT JENNIFER HOLIDAY WOULD OF BEEN SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MICHELE

It made sense to me to not include Holiday. Holiday will always be the definite Effie to me. Hudson pales by comparison. It would be like doing The Wizard Of Oz again and giving Garland (if alive) a cameo. Why invite the comparison??

i have been really surprised with the misunderstandings i have read in comments about ms. holiday, here and elsewhere. it's unfortunate most have treated both these beautiful singers/actresses as if they were in some kind of competition with one another. or perhaps, instigating that. reading this article, i understood her mention of a dreamgirls movie to be her hopes of an earlier timeframe, rightfully so. i hardly think she expected to play the role in a movie, 25 years later. then she clearly states that once a movie did come about, she wasn't even considered for a cameo (when another original cast member was) but they used her voice of 25 years ago to promote the movie. how gracious and honest of her to clarify she is not angry while maintaining it has been bittersweet. i think that is more to point out how poorly treated she has been during this remake process. by those involved in it's production as well as the public. sour grapes, yourself.
