WILLIE NINJA BENEFIT
Willie is one of my favorite all-time scenesters in NYC. He IS NYC. There are disputes over who first brought vogueing to the mainstream, but Willie definitely played a large part in it. "Fierce" and "kind" don't usually go hand in hand, but WIllie is an exception to this. He's one of the warmest people to ever light up NY nightlife. I'm deeply dismayed to hear that he's ill and know that if you've encountered his magic, you'll want to come out and support this nightlife legend. Unfortunately, I'm not certain that I'll be in NYC for it, but if you are, please stop by. Even if you don't Willie, Louie Vega's spinning and some fab vocalists including Barbara Tucker, Darryl D'Bonneau, Kenny Bobien and Inda Matrix will be performing. It'll be an Underground Network family affair and I'm sure the vibe will be classic NY.

I never saw him except in "Paris Is Burning" but I always respected him for doing something unique that got the attention of people far and wide.
I used to see Willie at Garage and was in awe of his energy. We met in Tokyo a few years later at a club called GOLD'S. He and his whole crew were touring Japan as was I DJing. He was very nice and humble dispite the Japanes kids were gagging over him. I am sorry to hear that Willie is ill. And I pray for a full recovery. And would pay to see him perform again.....
I met Willie in Virginia Beach, where I was COMPLETELY surprised to meet someone of his reputation in that area. He was very nice and personable, and I truly regret losing touch with him. I truly do wish him well.
JUST WANTED TO SAY, GOD BLESS WILLIE, HEARD HE PASSED AWAY AND WILL BE NISSED DEARLY, I REMEMEBER HIM, WHEN WE DID A SOUL TRIAN LIKE SHOW , CALLED, THIS WEEK'S MUSIC AND SHOWED EVERY SAT AND REMEMEBER MY 1 ST ENCOUNTER AT THE OLD UNLCE CHARLIES IN THE PIER, THATS WHEN I MET HIM, I WOULD NEVER FORGET U, U ARE A TRUE LEGEND! Fierce and kind really did go hand in hand with Willie- Lee Chappell brought him to Philadelphia to open the Saturday night parties at the Troc- in 91'- while all the other NY queens were carrying on- Willie stopped and treated the Philly talent hired with respect.
Nicky London just broke the news of his passing to me- I'm very sad, he'll be missed-
I am so saddened to hear of Willie's passing. He was a hue life force of the club scene in NYC and the world at large. I did not know him personally but have seen him onthe scene for many years . My condolensences go to his family. What a beautiful spirit he was !! He will be miissed !

My name is Edwin, and I am saddened by the news of Willie's passing. He was truly a wonderful being, and spite his "fierce" attitude and looks he was a gentle, kind, and unselfish artist, always wiiling to lend a helping hand to a friend. I remember A fiend, suggested I use him in one of my art show openings in D.C. And even though I was blown away by his art (I saw a clip of his participation in a Tierry Muegler show in Paris) Never in a million years I thought he would agree to come down here. But surprise, not only did he come, but also brought his "army" of beautiful voguers with him. Needless to say, watching them get off the train was an spectacle in itself, when people got a load of these intimidating looking men, looking al beautiful and imposing, it was like watching Moses part the waters so the queens strut their stuff! That was only a small sample of what was about to ubnleash in D.C. Being an almost oscure artist, my show did not get much publicity, but for those who witness that performance, were blown away, and never forgot him. I loved him dearly, and his kindness humbled me. I am sorry, I never got to see more of him, and now he is gone. Willie, your image and kindness, will be with me and those who knew you forever. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and "children" of the House of Ninja.

i agree with the above comment. willie was a great voguer and truely and inspiration, but people have to live their lives safely for themselves and others or we will lose them before their time just like we lost willie. please be proud of who you are and protect yourself!
It's so sad Willie is gone. He helped me out when I began my DJ career. It deeply saddens me to know he will no longer grace our presceence with his "fierceness". In this day and age of science it is crazy to think people are still loosing their lives to an invisible killer. We as a people need to be more proactive in our lives...Responsibilty is key. Many question God...I believe he is in the heavens with praise.
It is quite sad he is gone. I met Willie several times when he was working on the Love Ball benefits, and found him to be a terrific guy.
The NY Times description of Willie as "androgynous" seemed out of place. He may have been flamboyant, but he was a man, period.

We interviewed Willie when he was choreographing the runway for Sabbah's show in '99. Cool person. And boy, did he show them how to work it on the runway!

I have to disagree and also be offended by a comment made above, in reference to Willie being an example for people that use drugs and have unsafe sex! First of all Willie was not a drug user, as for unsafe sex, that is not the only way to contract HIV. Willie would not want to be used as an example of "look what happens to people that don't use protection." because people still and will continue to make bad decisions. Willie would want to be remember not by how he passed but how he spread love and kindness to all he incountered and to be remember by what he really stood for..family, friends, life and love.

I loved him thought he was such a beautiful person but im very upset with how he had to die. What a stupid way to die!!??? At this time and age theres no reason to die of aids!!?? I never thought he would die so soon i thought he would out live everyone in paris is burning he seemed so much smarter and cleaner than those people its really ashame. When I first became a writer, I worked on an article for LIFE magazine about house music, vogue-ing. It was a huge step towards what would become mainstream recognition of an underground force. Willie was integral to it. He was the best Vogue-er I'd ever seen...part fashion, part dance icon. Paris will always burn...
I am watching Paris is Burning as we speak. It is one of my favorite documentaries. I always wondered what happened to Willie Ninja so I googled and here I am!! I am sad to hear that Willie has passed away, he was a true legend and I know that he will be remebered as an innovator! All Hail the Mother of the House of Ninja!
