WHY YOU PROBABLY HATE WHAT'S ON THE RADIO

As a music lover and dj, this is tragic news. I knew something was up but I'm not a musicologist or even someone who reads music. But I am aware that pop music is for the most part, formulaic garbage. It's taken the joy out of djing a lot of the time because I'm forced to play today's hits, which ain't much. And certainly nothing compared to dance music even as recent as the 90s or the disco filtered house of the oughts, since that sample the sophisticated chords of disco played by orchestras. You know how you hear a song like Cee-Lo's Fuck You or Beyonce's Love On Top or Adele's Rolling In The Deep and think "Now that's a great song"? Sadly, these are now the exception. Now entire generations have grown up with garbage pop so they hanker for more. A great loss and I hope there's some way to turn it around. Fascinating article!

(Reuters) - Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.
Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.
A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.
