WOW...I haven't seen that shot of Prissy in years. We worked together @ Hamburger Mary's when I landed in SF in 1976. She had a calander w/that on the cover. God ...what a time we had.
The Cockettes had transformed into The Angels Of Light and Sylvester was just starting with Sunday Tea @ The Elephant Walk backed by Two Tons O' Fun aka The Weather Girls...fresh from church!! The sidewalks were a rockin'!!
Heaven is being 20 in 70's SF before Harvey was murdered and AIDS!!! Every Day was majic.
I question this generations concept of art and entertainment, avant-garde and the spectacular . Heaping rewards on talent less inane pseudo celebrities that fizzle and self destruct before our eyes. Spoiled attention whores like Anna Nicole, Paris, and Lindsey, have contributed nothing relevant and it’s sad to realize that colorful characters like the Cockettes were unable to pass the torch and inspire the next crop of performers. I welcome the day that eccentricity is rewarded and encouraged once again instead of an endless ennui of dull sameness. Thank God we have you Bunny, you fab freak!
Well, ayem8ty, to be fair, it's not like the Cockettes were the top marquee names of America in the 60s or 70s--in retrospect they may look bigger than they were, but only a select few "got it" then, or even knew who they were.
And don't forget to recognize, appreciate, encourage, and support the unique talents in our midst right now who are doing their own mind-blowing thing, even if they aren't on the cover of People Magazine: Lady Bunny, Dazzle Dancers, Leslie Hall, Kelly ("Shoes"), Elvira, Kiki & Herb, Alexyss Tylor, Varla Jean Merman, Vaginal Cream Davis, Brendan Fowler, Linda Simpson, Jeffree Starr, Taylor Mac, Flawless Sabrina, JD Sampson, assume astro vivid focus, a million semi-anonymous kooks on youtube, Penny Magic Show, Dina Martina, OK Go, John Waters still, RuPaul back at it w/ the new Starrbooty, Amanda Lepore...oh help me out here people, I know there's a million more.
If I wore a sash belt I'd look like planet Saturn.
