I guess it would be funny, that is if we think that Fat People are something to laugh about. In the land of UberGymBunnies on sterioids and testoserone and anorexic Stepford Fags; there seems to be little room for the full figured Divas. I am no fan of Mimi but, frankly; that joke isn't funny anymore. Maybe if the gay community moved past the adolescent mind set and moved on, we could accept people for who they are.
Dear the Divine Miss Jimmi, I agree that it is adolescent humor, which despite my age I still enjoy. Overweight myself, I don't tend to gravitate towards body fascists--I'm certainly no "gym Bunny"--and you're right, too much emphasis is placed on being thin in the gay community. (Even though with 2/3 of US adults now overweight, a new study showed that people's attitude towards heftier heifers has become less disapproving.)
And I love the full-figured divas! I'd rather a see Jocelyn Brown or Patti Labelle concert than a group show with Britney, J-Lo, Janet, Ashlee, Gwen, Kelly and Kylie combined.
But I don't think this is really "Mariah is fat, ha ha ha!" humor because she isn't fat and these photos are obviously exaggerated. The humor comes from the fact that Mariah is a little thick, yet she insists on pouring herself into skin-tight/skimpy clothes that really don't look good on her. (Bitch, leave the whore drag for the girls who can't sing!) Unless she is air-brushed thinner, as she supposely is in her videos. (You remember how they air-brushed more skin onto Whitney's skeletal arm for that awards show? It's the same thing in reverse.) Plus, as someone who performs song parodies for a living, I got quite a chuckle from CREAMLOVER and ALWAYS BE MY BAGEL!
Okay, I am probably one of the biggest Mimi fans out there and have no problem stating it. I have been a huge (no pun intended) supporter of her amazing talent and often inspirational lyrics since the beginning. I can laugh at these photos just as much as the next fag, but I do have to applaud Mariah at the same time. It takes a truly confident woman to wear the things she does, all while taking the criticisms of the rest of the world. I hope that everyone recognizes this type of humor as just that...humor. Otherwise we are just supporting the likes of more Lindsays and Kates.
Please Bunny! no more fat jokes at the expense of us fuller figured girls. Let's get back to our roots and make fun of retards and cancer patients.
