Gays were so quick to jump on Obama for giving homophobic pastor Rick Warren a spot at the inaugural ceremony. I was quick to point out that Obama hadn't thrown us under the bus, the bus hadn't even left the garage yet. Cut him some slack. As the community questioned why Obama chose Rev. Rick Warren to speak at the inaugration—seemingly in conflict with his previous support of the gay community, as Warren is a noted homophobe—we thought it might have been a consolation to the religious right, in preparation for Obama's plans for GLBT equality.
It seems our little hypothesis may be correct: within hours of taking the oath of office, Obama's team revamped the White House web site, amending the "Agenda" section on "Civil Rights." Take a look at THIS—the passage of the Matthew Shepard Act, full civil unions (are we really going to freak out about what it's called, if it is legally the same? please don't!) and promote HIV/AIDS prevention, which has been depressingly absent during the "abstinence-only" years of President Bush.
"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."

Caroline seems nice and smart. But she also seemed to have no vision other than "milk my family connections". I don't think that this impoverished country is in the mood for nobility. We need workers with proven track records in public service. Although there were hints of improprieties regarding her maid's legal status and her tax records, Caroline claims that she has withdrawn from the race because of Ted's illness. Her spokesperson has said that anyone offering a different reason for her withdrawal--ie the public outcry against he possible selection--is "mudslinging". Call it what you want, honey, but if it's the truth, I'll gladly sling it.

The bus hasn't left the garage yet? Come ON! What more do you need to know other than the fact that HIS OWN MOUTH says on every occasion he gets that gays SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO MARRY! And that EXPLICITLY says... "gays should not ever be equal". THE BUS LEFT, THE GARAGE LEFT, AND TRIPLE A DONE GONE TOO! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!

He couldn't have gotten elected if he said that gays should have the right to marry. Could anyone? Since marriage as a religious ceremony means nothing to me personally, I'll gladly take the civil ceremonies he's offering. Of course I believe that gays should have the same rights as everything else, but I think that while this man has our interests at heart, he's not going to throw away his entire agenda to support gay marriage since it isn't his priority either. And the other things on his agenda trump gay marriage for me, too. Now I know that these things are just points on his website and not laws, but that now happens to be the president's website. For him to even know what Stonewall is, indicates a shift towards equality. I'm not gonna damn him because he can't give everybody what everybody wants right now.
And the only candidate for gay marriage was Kucinich, who I voted for in the primary. As I've said before, if gay marriage was the main issue for gays, why didn't we line up to back Kucinich?
