The cause of universal healthcare is alive and well. Not only is the state of Vermont moving toward a single-payer system, but Vermont's U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced a bill and held a hearing on the benefits other countries enjoy from a single-payer system that would benefit everyone except the profiteering middlemen who've rigged the current system.
Click here to ask your senators to cosponsor and support. This is a joint action with RootsAction and the Labor Campaign for Single Payer. We're only 1,000 signatures away from our 25,000 goal!
"The United States is the only major nation in the industrialized world that does not guarantee healthcare as a right to its people," Sanders said. "It is time that we bring about a fundamental transformation of the American healthcare system. It is time for us to end private, for-profit participation in delivering basic coverage."
The bill, S. 1782, the American Health Security Act, would be a much more significant change to health coverage than those recently implemented. It would create a much simpler, less wasteful system of paying for healthcare, one that's in fact been tested in every other industrialized nation in the world, every one of which buys more healthcare for less money than we do in the United States.
The current system remains so broken that change must come. The question is how slowly and how piecemeal, and with how much unnecessary suffering along the way.

DINA JACOBS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN SHOW BUSINESS TONIGHT!

Tonight, a major hormonal convergence descends upon Houston, Texas to celebrate Dina Jacobs' 50 anniversary in show biz! An array of pageant title-holders from Dana Douglas, Sweet Savage, Tiffany Arieagus and Tasha Kohl will turn it out for the beloved diva. Since the theme is Disco-Lish-ous, I hope Sweet Savage will electrify with her ridiculously energetic version of Bohannan's Let's Start The Dance. And many of us are familiar with Tiffany's iconic Macarthur Park. I first met Dina in Atlanta, where RuPaul and I both were enchanted and starstruck by her beauty and stage presence. When the bitch did Natalie Cole's Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and opened her hands to display rhinestones glued over all over her hands, we literally beat the walls! A friend of mine saw Dina perform this number in Provincetown a few years ago and said that it was the best drag number they'd ever seen and they actually believed that Dina was singing it. (Despite the fact that there was no microphone in sight.) And 50 years into the business, as my sisters from then and now can attest, Dina has still got it like that. I think Larry Edwards, Electra Jimbuff, Lily White, Charlie Brown, Gilda Golden, Diana Coney, Tisch DeWiliams, Billie Jean Beetem, Cezanne Blincoe, Mimi Marks, Kara Dion will all agree!

I've had the pleasure of getting to know her over the years and Dina has always been a hoot. She's had her share of life's challenges but always comes out smiling and on top. I'll never forget being booked at Honolulu's gay pride and getting to hang for a few days with Dina--Dina is puerto rican but originally from Hawaii. She took me all around to show me great fabric shops, jewelry stores and of course, fried donuts. And you know you've gotten to be good friends with someone when Dina tells you: "I look like a real woman who's a local. Now we're going to take you to the roughest part of Honolulu and I'm going to scream that you called me the hawaiian version of the N-word and let the gangs attack you in my defense." I mean, who gets THAT kind of eclectic tour of Honolulu?

50 years in the fickle entertainment business is nothing to sneeze at. It's a testament to Dina's talent, staying power and loving personality that she's around this long. And she's still knocking them dead in her new home of Houston. I was so very honored to be asked to join the cast for this event but travel plans prevented it. All the best to you, Dina! You know I love you dearly and will close my tribute to you and your timeless magic with Natalie Cole's opening words from Lucy In The Sky. You've entertained so many with this song and this part suits you and your anniversary to a t.

"As we continue along on our journey, in our time machine. Out our window, we pass through many different eras of time. Times when ladies were very, very special. Like Cleopatra. Helen Of Troy. Venus, the goddess of love. And who do we have for the future?"

DINA F#CKING JACOBS, Y'ALL! KNOCK 'EM DEAD TONIGHT! (That's just an expression. Don't actually die, you old heifer!)

I COULDN'T EAT THIS!

IT WOULD BE CANNIBALISM!

WHAT DRUG IS THIS?

PLEASE SIGN AND FORWARD IF YOU AGREE!

Four years ago, the Supreme Court made their disastrous Citizens United decision, allowing corporations like Monsanto and Chevron to spend unlimited money to influence elections — putting corporations over people.

We're working with a lot of allies to take back our democracy by reversing this decision, but it's going to take time to build a grassroots movement to demand change on that level.

The good news is the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) can start to rein in corporate money now! Tell SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White to require corporations to disclose their political spending.

Since Citizens United, we've seen a flood of money in our political system. Campaign spending in 2012 was almost five times greater than in 2010, surpassing $1 billion for the first time in history.¹

We already know that the biggest corporations in the world like Chevron and Monsanto lobby in droves to influence lawmakers in order to put profits over people. So it's not too far fetched to imagine that they would do the same to buy elections to ensure that they have lawmakers that are willing to do their bidding. But we don't know for sure, because right now, corporations can spend entirely in secret.

In fact, the Supreme Court never intended for corporations to be able to spend unlimited amounts of money in secret.² And SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White has the power to fix it.

Send a message right now to the SEC: Don't let corporations hide their political spending!

We have seen the power we can wield against corporations when we work together.

At the beginning of this year, corporate interests worked fiercely to ram the TPP — a secret trade deal — through Congress in order to give themselves the power to challenge our democratically created laws, like sourcing local food for schools, banning fracking in your community and labeling genetically engineered (GMO) foods. But after countless messages, phone calls, office visits and rallies from people across the country, the bill has stalled — for now. This is huge!

We CAN inspire enough people across the country to stand together to shift the balance of power from the small handful of wealthy elite back to the people and to restore our democracy.

Now take the first step: make sure corporations are not allowed to spend in secret so we can hold them accountable.

HE MAN BEHIND THE FACE: COSMETIC SURGEON TO THE STARS DR. BRANDT PROFILED

THE MAN BEHIND THE FACE BY GUY TREBAY

The painting is four panels — two depicting Alfred E. Neuman, the jug-eared mascot of Mad magazine, two picturing Phyllis Diller in characteristic fright drag and clutching an issue of that same magazine. The 2014 picture is by Julia Wachtel, an artist whose work holds up a glass to the fun-house distortions of our culture.
On a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon, Elizabeth Dee, a gallery owner showing at the fifth annual Independent Art Fair in Chelsea, is offering the $50,000 painting to Dr. Fredric Brandt, an art collector and unnervingly ageless-looking personage, a man who is himself intimately familiar with the trick mirrors of society.
“I love Phyllis Diller!” Dr. Brandt said, emitting a laugh that is part trill and part adolescent yelp. “She was such an important figure when I was a kid, with her husband, Fang, and all that plastic surgery.”
With her face lifts, breast reductions, neck lifts, nose job, chemical peels, cheek implants and tummy tucks, Phyllis Diller was an early and unabashed adventurer into the strange and constantly evolving frontiers of cosmetic medicine. Over the course of a three-decade career, the dermatologist has proved himself to be a spiritual descendant of Diller and probably every other voyager gone in search of the fountain of youth.

VANISHING NEW YORK

Both parties love to talk about mom & pop businesses being the backbone of the American economy. Yet few lawmakers display  backbone in helping smaller businesses stay in business since everything they do is geared towards giants like chains. I'm not saying that I never use them, but I'm making a conscious effort to stop. Because every time you patronize a Starbucks, Subway or Duane Reade, you take business away from a mom & pop business which desperately needs your $ to fight ever-raising rents. I know that chains are cheap and convenient, but those will be our only choices unless we make a concerted effort to patronize more unique choices like some of these quintessentially NYC establishments which have closed prove. There's a block on 8th Avenue in Chelsea with a Chase bank on each corner. And this certainly isn't just NYC--was just in SF and there were two Subway's on each corner. Interesting article with pics of which businesses have replaced some notable closures.

PLANE RETARDED!

I flew to Puerta Vallarta on the Monday that was St. Patricks Day. The lost Malaysian plane drama was in full swing. I came home a week later and it was still the lead news item, even though no new info had been uncovered. (A day or two later investigators did discover some debris.) Now, either I’m a sociopath who is incapable of feeling sympathy for the victims or our “news” is really pulling a pathetic stunt with it’s non-stop coverage of the tragedy.

I certainly felt for the victims of natural disasters like Katrina, Haiti, the tsunami that hit Thailand and the nuclear reactors melting down in Japan. But all of those featured gruesome, heart-wrenching new footage of people trapped on top of houses wearing rags while begging helicopters for water, bodies washing up weeks later with desperate relatives trying to identify them or the horror of the nuclear reactors which we still don’t know the full effects of. (Many are saying don’t touch the radioactive seafood from anywhere near that region and that “that region” has extended to California’s coasts.)

Of course, a missing plane with hundreds presumed dead is also grim. I’m sure the poor families are eager for closure. If the planes were hijacked by terrorists, then by all means let’s try to pinpoint the rascals. I fly a lot. If it was a technical malfunction, let’s please root out the problem to avoid others like it in the future. But to beat the disappearance of this flight to death for weeks with no new information is completely imbalanced. A plane went down and almost certainly, all were killed if it hasn’t been found by now. Until there’s something new to report, this story is dead in the water. Jon Stewart made several digs at CNN’s bizarre coverage, yet CNN’s low ratings spiked as a result of it. But is giving the people what they want for ratings short-changing the people who want actual news that’s more vital than a finite number of people dying in a plane crash?

I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with curiosity, and I’m interested to know of major new developments in this case—but not the colors of the debris found. Until there is new info, let the sanctimonious snapping turtle Nancy Grace cover this 24/7—she excels at mock outrage. Trotting out bereaved relatives claiming that their mother or girlfriend was the greatest while slideshows of these people are aired is total tabloid fodder. And you have to wonder which news items are getting bumped in favor of this plane’s disappearance. Look at the ads on any news channel and you’ll see plenty of ads from banks, whose unfair practices caused the mortgage crisis and were given millions of tax payer dollars in the bail-out. You’ll see plenty of ads from oil companies, whose financial interests we actually send young men and women to die in wars for. And who are permitted to frack and erect pipelines despite the clear dangers to those who live nearby. Pipelines like the Keystone which Obama may well approve despite his “commitment” to environmental issues. Since one in four huge corporations pay ZERO taxes due to the loopholes that they bribe our lawmakers to create, you can rest assured that these corporations advertise on there as well, and their frighteningly close relationship with our government isn’t going to be reported on. I think most Americans would be very interested to learn, with our own tax deadlines approaching and some of us feeling the pinch, that many of the businesses which make the most pay nothing.

It’s just like the Chris Christie scandal which is still the #1 news item on MSNBC after several months. (In truth, the NJ governor did give a press conference yesterday on an investigation which deserves to be disputed—but that explains yesterday’s coverage saturation only.) A bridge got closed for a few days in August and there are allegations of corruption. A plane carrying 239 people can’t be found. Certainly, these stories are of interest. And if all passengers are miraculously found safe on Gilligan’s Island, I’ll join the world in rejoicing. But until then, these tales should not dominate the news for months or weeks. A democracy can’t work without an informed electorate and our “news” media isn’t informing us about issues that matter. I think Americans of any political affiliation would agree that the country is a mess, from the economy to our crumbling infrastructure to NSA’s out-of-bounds spying on US citizens. How do you escape a mess when your news outlets continually spout useless information? As the fact that we elected George W. Bush twice proves, Americans aren’t too smart. And with Obama’s 40% approval rating, many of us are questioning why we gave him a second chance. So if you think that glutting the airwaves with non-details about a plane that crashed is going to help you choose the effective leader who’s going to lead us out of this mess that affects all of our personal prosperity and even safety, keep tuning in to Fox, CNN, MSNBC and network news. And good luck to ya!

PATHETIC!

If you ask me, input from clubbers on what the djs should play isn't usually a good idea. I'm not talking about a private party--where one should play requests. Many club djs frown on taking requests, since there is an old-fashioned and wonderful notion that the dj has been hired because of his/her knowledge of great music and how to work a crowd. So trust them. And most requests are from the clueless who don't want to hear an expert's underground masterpieces--they feel the dj isn't playing commercial enough cuz there isn't enough Britney or Rihanna in their sets. Let the dj who is hired for his/her experience and taste educate the crowd--not have the crowd try to educate the expert. I'm curious to hear what some of my dj friends have to say about this new development.

There is a demonstration video which makes me wish that these wristbands be also worn as necklaces--VERY TIGHT NECKLACES! At a time when djs are booked on their ability to appease clients who buy bottle service and when legendary producers like Dennis Ferrer are being taken off the decks for not playing commercial enough, this seems like another step in the wrong direction to me.

Drag Queens of Comedy Share Castro Theatre Stage

An excerpt:

“We purchased a fancy, new drag queen bed. The sheets tuck themselves in! Thank you. Good night. Tip your waitress!”
Yes, ladies and germs, the Drag Queens of Comedy are making their way to San Francisco for one night only, at 7 and 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Castro Theatre.
Hosted by SF drag superstars, Heklina and Peaches Christ, the event will bring funny girls Miss Coco Peru, Lady Bunny, Shangela, Bianca Del Rio, Pandora Boxx, Sasha Soprano and DWV to the stage. Have this many comedy queens ever shared such a bill?
“Oh, I wasn’t aware any of them were in comedy,” Lady Bunny said. “Heklina is hilarious to look at. I’m kidding! Leave it to [producer] Sasha to really put together a great bunch. On stage, I would say she’s both lovely and talented…just not on the same night.”

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, th...e donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

    MORAL :
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

    1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

    2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.

    3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

    4. Give more.

    5. Expect less from people but more from yourself.

THIS AMERICAN BRO: A PORTRAIT OF THE WORST GUY EVER

    By John Saward for Vice.com:

"It is almost 9 AM on St. Patrick’s Day, and he is on the Metro North train to Manhattan from some grassy, forgettable Westchester suburb. When he boarded the train he was carrying a case of light beer, but now it is on the floor, obstructing the aisle, in everyone’s wayhis entire existence is in everyone’s wayHe is wearing a North Face fleece and sunglasses made of neon-orange plastic. He is pulsing like the mercury on a cartoon thermometer; he is ready to explode through the glass. It seems impossible for a human being to care this much about recreation, to care this much about celebrating something so tiny, so contrived, but that is why he is alive. He will come, he will see, he will conquer. He will vomit out the window of a taxi. He is the American Bro."

    SINCE 1948???

After A Long War, Can NYU and the Village Ever Make Peace?
    By Eli Rosenberg
Greenwich Village was up in arms. New York University was seeking to expand again, this time on the south side of Washington Square Park, and the plan was not going over well in the historically low-rise neighborhood. Residents formed protest groups, pledging to "Save Washington Square," warning that NYU was on the verge of taking over the park. They framed the conflict as a battle for territory. "What we want to know is when NYU is going to put a stop to its expansion along Washington Square," a leader of a local group told the New York Times. "It has been known for years as a residential section, and we're going to see that it stays that way." A quarter-century before, the school's chancellor had admitted that he hoped the school would eventually surround the square, taking the park for its campus. It was 1948.

WHY IS A REPUBLICAN GETTING A SEGMENT ON MSNBC ANYWAY?

MSNBC personality Abby Huntsman on Thursday, March 13, 2014, claimed that Social Security benefits needed to be cut in order to preserve them for future generations.

That's not true, and we ask that MSNBC issue an on-air correction to Huntsman’s segment. We also ask that Richard Eskow and Richard Fowler be invited on “The Cycle” to refute her claims. Eskow and Fowler recently co-authored a rebuttal to Huntsman, "Dear Abby: An Open Letter to MSNBC’s Huntsman About Social Security," which was published this weekend on OurFuture.org and in The Huffington Post.

In the segment on MSNBC's “The Cycle,” Huntsman misused average life expectancy data to convince viewers that Social Security is unsustainable. She claims that our choices are to either cut Social Security benefits by as much as 20 percent or raise the retirement age to 75, otherwise there will be “nothing left” for her generation.

All of this is flat wrong. Today, Social Security can pay out 100 percent of promised benefits through 2033 and 75 percent of promised benefits through 2087. Furthermore, that 75 percent of promised benefits in 2033 would still be higher than benefits are today. The simplest solution to the problem Huntsman exaggerates is to ask millionaires and billionaires to pay into Social Security at the same rate as the rest of us.

Huntsman is creating a phony “generational war” between young and old, simply repeating talking points ginned up by Wall Street billionaire think tanks.

We demand that MSNBC issue an on-air correction to Huntsman’s false attacks on Social Security.

MORE ANCIENT DRAG HISTORY BY LINDA SIMPSON

New York now has two drag strongholds — Hell’s Kitchen (the city’s gay epicenter) and the outer reaches of Brooklyn, where the youthquake gender-fuck esthetic is reminiscent of the 1980s East Village. However, NYC’s influence has clearly weakened. Thanks to Drag Race, today’s top queens are likely to be from Smalltown, USA, having learned their craft from YouTube tutorials rather than drag mothers.

It’s a whole new drag world, and to all you queens enjoying the moment, my generation has something to say: You're welcome. We paved the way, boldly going where no other gender illusionists had gone before. During difficult times, we rose to the occasion and provided joy and color. It’s no exaggeration: we were the greatest drag generation.

FUN ARTICLE ABOUT THE PYRAMID CLUB AT 101 AVE A

An oral history of the New York space that served as the stomping ground for influential performance artists, musicians and drag queens like John Kelly, Larry Tee, Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons, RuPaul and Lady Bunny.

    TRICIA ROMANO:

"In December of 1981, a seedy old Polish bar on Avenue A and Seventh Street, situated across from Tompkins Square Park, celebrated a grand reopening. Though it was small and divey, The Pyramid Club would soon become a cornerstone of the East Village underground art and performance scene that attracted New York’s cultural elite in the mid-’80s. During those years, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Madonna, could be seen amidst the crowds who ventured to the Wild Wild East to watch the depraved and inspired performances happening within the Pyramid’s walls."

FROM TROY JACKSON: President Obama dropped the so-called “Chained CPI” (a fancy Washington term for reducing benefits for seniors) from his fiscal budget. Yet Republicans, and frankly, too many bad Democrats are still pushing to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Millions rely on these benefits — but Washington is so desperate to balance the budget on the backs of middle class families, they are trying to hurt our seniors.
That’s why I’m proud to be the only candidate in this race that has pledged to protect, not cut, Social Security and Medicare. Its why I'm proud to be the only candidate in this race that refused to raid the Maine Pension fund to pay for tax cuts to the wealthy.
Because I’m not another ivory tower politician that Washington loves — I’m a logger from Maine who understands how important Social Security and Medicare are to seniors.
Balancing the budget is the right idea, but Washington is going about it all wrong.
If elected to Congress, I’ll fight to protect these programs — and get Washington to zero in on the real budget busters like unnecessary wars and unpaid for tax cuts.

    CAPTION OF THE YEAR!

    BEBE ZAHARA BENET'S NEW VIDEO

The bitch is giving you FACE and seems to have taken a few styling tips from some old Diana Ross costume video where the songs were rotten but Ross was working cloches and 30s looks. All Bob Mackie, I'm sure. I prefer big hair, but Bebe's make-up is so hot that she's pulling it off!
